I Have My Master Bedroom Door Open Into the Bathroom - Is That Bad?

I do not consider myself a Feng Shui expert by any stretch of the imagination. However, I do have a book and a color wheel chart with directional zones and understand the basic principles. I have had clients who have requested certain features that are non-negotiable.

As for bathrooms....I did not know that you could lose sleep from a connected bedroom and bathroom! YIKES!  - I have been told to put the commode lid down and cover the shower drain when not in use. Read what Laura has to say. It is very interesting...

This is a common question in Feng Shui and its fair to say, how each Feng Shui Consultant responds may differ.  For now, the insights shared below offer a general overview.

Remember, Feng Shui speaks in metaphors and symbols.

Bathrooms in Feng Shui are said to associated with drain or 'sha chi.' When the water is done being used, it drains away. Is this anything to fear? No. It's just something to be mindful of.

In general, when the architect is designing the floor plan for a home, its strongly suggested to avoid the placement of bathroom doors opening up into any bedroom because of drain energy. Its believed your sleep could be interrupted, thus impacting your health.

Are there ways to negotiate this principles? Absolutely.

The diagram above helps to illustrate

You will see two red arrows, they indicated energy flow. You'll also see a red circle around the toilet, I'll explain that in a moment.

Looking at the placement of the bed, you'll see it's not in alignment with the bedroom doorway or the bathroom doorway. Is that good? Yes. This means no drain is hitting directly into the person(s) sleeping in that bed. So this is a better Master bedroom and bathroom combo.

The toilet is highlighted because it's tucked far away from the the bathroom doorway. That is another principle in Traditional Feng Shui. To limit the view of the toilet upon walking into the bathroom. Why? It's believed the toilet gives off the most drain energy of all the appliances in this room.

Another quick tip: at night when sleeping, keep the bathroom door closed. This is believed to help contain the energy within the bathroom vs spilling out into your bedroom.

Finally, with all bathrooms, another great and simply way to enhance its energy is to change your perspective of it. Even though I have been taught 'bathrooms are bad,' they could also be very good. How so? Treat the decor of it like a mini spa and change your own perspective. Yes, I am mindful of what they could represent if not balanced, along with other factors, while also aware of its great potential.

Sheri, I had the same reaction when I read Laura Cerrano  post and that is how our bathroom is and you know in all fairness I sleep like a log... only loose sleep when the dog wakes me up or the cats... and if Diane complains about my snoring:))Endre

Hi Sheri.  Interesting re-post, I've seen people and homes that don't particularly follow this advice and they seem to do OK.

Hi Sheri... I had read this post originally. I'd heard about shutting the doors to bathrooms (not just in a master) as being good feng shue a long time ago and follow this practise. No idea if it really works, but nothing to lose by keeping those doors shut.

This really goes over my head. I am thinking the door is not a problem as long as noise, unwanted early morning light and general noises are restricted!

Well good thing we sleep like babies in my house because the cat box is in there and there is no closing that door.

Feng Shi is a very interesting topic . . . . Some peoples are elites and others have no interest . . . .We just have to know the level of the interest of our customers.

Good luck and success.

Hi Sheri

I dont' particularly care of the open look in aster bedrooms with the bath but it's pretty common here. I sure didn't know about them from a Feng Shui perspective, nor the other things mentioned. Off to read Laura post again.

I have never thought about this. I like the door open for convenience sake and getting up in the middle of the night. The door to the toilet room stays closed most of the time.

Since this isn't generally considered in housing design at least in our part of the world...closed doors can be an option if yuo ascribe to this belief.
