Friday Photo: Vallo di Nero, Umbria, Italy

The Umbria region of Italy is replete with small medieval villages built on hills and surrounded by walls that were built to keep the invaders out.  I took this photo as we were driving  to Perugia from Norcia (truffle and proscuitto, and all things pork and boar capital).

I was attracted to the fall colors of the mountains as well as the sheen of the olive trees below.  The cloud formation was unusual, and in looking back I wonder whether they were signaling the 6.6 magnitude earthquake that came that afternoon, and reduced buildings to rubble.  Fortunately, there were no human casualties.

Happy Friday To All.

We can never take anyone or anything for granted. My heart goes out to the people in Italy, the landscaping, their livelihood, animals, and the environment.

Hi Ron & Alexandra - Mary & I once rented a farmhouse in Umbria and spent 2 weeks exploring all of those wonderful little towns - it's a great area to visit, much less hectic than Tuscany next door.

That earthquake,; my sister just missed it and I didn't know you were almost in it, too!! Yikes. I have never seen olive trees, thank you--oh, but my sister has decided that in two years we're heading to Italy TOGETHER! (Gives us enough time to gather the buckos...) You mentioned the meat...she told me she didn't find fish or salads, just lots of cheese and salamis, which she loved (I'm going to have a hard time--I guess I'll just DRINK wine).

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905  they do have vegetables and salads, and yes even fish which is flown in from Sicily.  Almost all of Italy is surrounded by seas and there are plenty of lakes with fish.  They have the best cured salmon also.  You are not going to have a problem.  A

Nice shot of the mountain with the variation of tree colors and the cloud formations.  Too bad that it was the lull before the earthquake

That is lovely and so green. We were both so grateful to hear that the earthquake spared humans - sad to hear about the historic buildings collapsing in rubble though.

I am so happy that you did not see much devastation from the earthquake in Umbria - it happened while we were away in Greece.  Michael Jacobs is right, lif turns on a dime!

Michael Jacobs very wise words from you as usual.  So many people put their lives on hold, waitng for ?

Joanna Cohlan This was the second one in two months.  Norcia suffered some damage from the one that hit Abruzzo on their wall and their church.  All that was being repaired...We loved that little town and where we stayed.  I will be sharing more photos.  A

Great, can't wait to see them.  Still trying to decide on a bike trip next September/October to either Provence or to Puglia-while I love Italy most, I think biking in Provence must be heaven-thoughts?

Joanna Cohlan we did quite a bit of research on Puglia, and my feeling was that there would be a lot of driving from village to village.  So our idea was to stay in one place and take jaunts here and there.  It has been years  since we have been in Provence, so I don't know much about it.  In Umbria, at a wonderful little restaurant in Panicale, we saw a French family that was biking around the area, and later I saw some literature on biking trips.  This was in the suburb of Perugia.  Sorry, I am not much help here.  A
