Do you know where the Statue of Anonymus is?
No I did not misspell his name Anonymous vs. Anonymus, does that give you a hint?
Ok It is in ‘The City Park’, in the courtyard of Vajdahunyad Castle. If that is not a good enough hint, well let me tell you ‘The City Park’ is a public park close to the center of Budapest, Hungary. It is a rectangle with about 302 acres and is in the XIV District of Budapest. In case you were wondering the Hungarian spelling of Anonymous is Anonymus.
So, who was he, you might wonder? Well, he was the first medieval Hungarian chronicler who provided insight into medieval Hungary. His chronicles were singed as “the notary of the most glorious King Bela”. Then you might guess, that would be easy to accurately identify him, unfortunately there were four kings called Bela in the 12th and 13th centuries, hence he remains anonymous for now.
When Diane and I traveled to Hungary there was this photographer selling his pictures and we were intrigued at a couple of his photos and the rest is history.
The sculptor Miklos Ligeti pays tribute to the nameless story teller by hiding his face under a hood to portray the fact, that this unique historical figure remained Anonyous all this time.
If you have never visited Budapest, Hungary put it on your list of destination places for your European Tour, you will be glad that you did.
