Thoughts The Morning After The Election

I'm going to break with my own rule of not approaching politics with blog posts.  And to a certain degree this post isn't really about politics either.

If you read my Facebook post this morning, you've already seen this (consider it a reblog of my own stuff basically).  But there's a lot of happiness and a lot of heartache out there today and I felt sharing this was more important than posting a market report that can wait another day.

Bill

Thoughts the morning after the election:

Who we are is not defined by who sits in the White House.

Who we are was defined long before. We're individuals with unique viewpoints based upon our upbringing, our experiences and the choices we made to form our belief system that guides our daily actions. Whether that core belief system is framed by our faith and trust in God is each individual's decision.

The election was contentious, divisive and pretty much every negative adjective in Websters, yet it still doesn't define who we are as individuals.
This election wasn't some referendum that okayed racism, hate, sexism and pretty much any other -ism you want to choose. That existed long before the election and hate to say it, but will exist long after I've finished walking this earth. The roots are deep and won't be changed by merely electing a different gender to the White House.

At its core this election was a rejection of the status quo.

It was also a statement about apathy and failure to vote. The difference easily beyond the sum of all those who say "my vote doesn't matter". Those who didn't participate could have easily altered the outcome.

We can not nor should we ever look to our political leaders to be our saviors. We are the ones that make the differences day by day with the choice to act or not act, to help or not help.

We can choose to reunite, or be forever divided.

It's time to stop letting the "experts" decide for us how to think and how to act.

That choice is ours, always has been and always should be.

Appreciate the good and don't let FEAR of the unknown consume your present. Life is short, enjoy what you have.

Our dogs and cats don't care who is in the White House. A good meal, a safe place to sleep, someone to pet them and they're pretty happy.

Climbing down off my soapbox.

Lynn, We've got to be realistic about who we are and what we control.  My only concern with the Forget "Why" post is the author is making assumptions about what Trump WILL do and already gearing up for the equivalent of political guerilla warfare.  I suspect (and hope) that much of the campaign rhetoric was just that, and words will not become actions.  And if the hateful stuff does become action, than the pushback will be appropriate.

Elizabeth, We all will, and I'm more of the "let's see what he ACTUALLY does" view.  At the end of the day, I don't expect a HUUUUUGE wall on the southern border, I don't expect a stop to immigration, etc.  There are too many reasons that make those "promises" totally unviable.

Janice, My opinion is that elections aside, each of us should be looking for ways to make a difference in our communities and to find a way to minimize the Us Uns vs. the We Uns (insert reference to Pogo!)

Michael, A lot of what I'm seeing on FB over the last few days indicates a lack of understanding (e.g. why the electoral college exists), the desire to blame (e.g. the elections results are what they are because of 3rd party voters...while ignoring that neither main candidate provided a compelling enough case for 46% of registered voters to be bothered to leave their homes and vote), and oversimplification (ALL Trump supporters are racists, etc).  But it's not a one party problem.  I don't recall the Republicans being overly excited (to understate massively) about Obama being elected 8 years ago.  I'm counting on the checks and balance system to do it's job and keep ALL Americans protected.

Liz and Bill Spear ~ there's a quote about "fear" that seems to fit your theme. Fear has two meanings: 1. Forget Everything And Run 2. Face Everything And Rise.

The choice is up to us

I recently thought about how most of us all so disliked the media's approach and divisiveness. We were unified on that point. The media should keep their opinions to themselves and just report not try to "make" the news. Report "all" of it plain and simple. We are smart enough to figure out what we need to think. We have proved to ourselves as a nation our votes do count no matter whom we choose. I'm one of those who will see what is done rather what is said. I don't know about you all, but I'm so weary of "say it over and over until they believe it!"

Not going to get into my personal political opinions here, I voted but not for either major party candidate. I will say that I think that fact that almost twice as many eligible voters stayed home than voted for either major party candidate speaks volumes.

That being said even though I didn't personally vote for our President elect I wish him and our country nothing but the very best. As Americans I think we all should.

Happy Veterans Day to all my brothers & sisters that served.

Jon, there is that choice.  Some battles are in no need of being fought, others deserve every ounce of resistance we have.  That decision will vary person to person.

Vicki, No doubt I have the same objection to the media.  Do NOT try to influence the outcome.  Quite tired of all the polls that are trying to point us to WHO to vote for.  Provide the facts, don't bias it and let us make our own decisions.

Patrick, You have company here, I coudn't personally select either of the two mains.  The solution to winning and losing was who got more of those people to turn out.  The Dems weren't able to inspire enough of the 46% to get out of their chairs and come cast a ballot.  I'm hopeful that after the initial angst the country will be able to get back together, although considering the long term resistance to Obama, I probably should expect that.  Bill

could not agree more. Maybe some good news is that our people seem to be showing some passion for the first time in a long time. My suggestion to all: get better informed, do not believe the news you see at face value, work hard and all your dreams will come true :)

Jeffrey, No doubt, we're in a profession that can generate its own rewards, it's just a matter of how much effort we want to put into the tasks required.

B'Liz, first, what a thoughtful piece!  And it's a much more complicated thing than most of us  comprehend right now.  And the big question is how to you get from the status quo to a better place?  And what will that place look like?  I think it depends a lot on which Donald Trump shows up to take the oath of office!

Well said, Liz & Bill.  Didn't these people realize that there was a 50/50 shot a winning the election?  Some will win, while the others will lose.  We cannot get everything we want.  Playing games as a child, we learned this.  We voice our opinion and hope for the best.  If it turns out that we (or our candidate) does not win, then let's work together until the next time.  United we stand, divided we fall.

Pat, We got to where we are with much complication.  It's not as simple as the pundits would lead us to believe (seriously, the only reason Trump won is because he got a bunch of stupid racists to vote for him??).  People got tired of being told what to do, who to vote for.  People frustrated with the stagnation in DC.  Desperate enough to try ANYONE not part of the existing cadre.  Now people on both sides continuing to lash out, and that needs to be condemned by the leaders on both sides.  Time to remember Obama's main point, we are all AMERICANS.  Hoping that come January the Trump we see is the pragmatic businessman and not the inciter we saw during the campaign.

Brigita, Unfortunately some of this IMO comes back to the failure to continue teaching people how to lose gracefully as kids.  When we get trophies for just showing up, the wrong message is sent.  The world is competitive, sometimes brutally harsh and you've got to bring your "A" game, and even with that, some days we're going to come in 2nd place, and maybe a lot farther out than 2nd.  No matter which way this election ended, there were going to be a lot of disappointed voters.  Hopefully we as a people can get past this and work towards making improvements to how our goverment serves its function.

Mary, I've been a lot of other places over the years and while I might enjoy visiting other countries, there's no place I'd rather live than HERE.  We have our flaws as a country, but still a great place to live.

Well written.  My biggest concern with the election is who we have become.  Decent people were table thumping false news, posting lewd photos, and generally behaving badly.  Notice how the media is smiling and cuddling up to the same people that they were berating a week ago.  It's time for the adults to show up.

Mary Jo, No argument there.  The last few months have featured completely ignoring logic, facts and reality.  It's okay if MY candidate does this, but let me point out YOUR candidate doing a similar thing.  Hypocrisy has run amok for months.  Hoping we can get back to something resembling "normal" soon, but something has to give to get there.  A lot of people are going to need some serious convincing that Trump is capable of doing the job and also NOT condoning the idiots out there who think they have a free pass to hate.

Agreed.   We can't do anything about the outcome so hopefully the new president will surround himself with smart people and make smart decisions.  I heard one very good idea mentioned a few days ago.  Government could reinvest in infrastructure and putting a lot of people back to work.  Pretty sure a previous president used that tactic and it worked very well.

Harry, I never felt it wasn't great so I never cared for that slogan.  We're still a great country, just different than in years past.

Jan, I know it wouldn't be well received, but have thought for a long time that some type of universal service requirement wouldn't be a bad thing.  Doesn't have to be military service, but either way I think it would give people a better perspective on how to work with others and about being part of something bigger than just yourself.
