Real Estate Marketing - is this tacky or thoughtful?

I had to laugh as some agents in my office were discussing funny ways to generate new leads.  It had come up in conversation that I like to work on my website or send client emails while sitting at Starbucks with my dog and my laptop.  Someone said, you should get her a shirt that says "My mom is a real estate agent".  I had to laugh.  Tacky or cute and thoughtful?  You decide.  Would you put your child or dog in something like this?

I've heard countless stories about what I'd consider slightly tacky ways Realtors have promoted themselves - but maybe it is worth it if it brings you a customer!  What do you think?

P.S.  If you think its cute, you can get this shirt and many other real estate related shirts like it at CafePress.

Hey! I think anything is fair game nowadays and you never know where that next lead is going to come from!

In this market, everything you can do to keep your name out there helps.  I think it's adorable.

I think it would be cute if your dog is next to you are starbucks while you work, not so cute while on a walk.  I think there is point where self promotion starts and stops.

I wouldn't put my kids in anything real estate related.  Their job is to be a kid, not my walking billboard.

I think a dog in a shirt like that would be very cute... but for some reason I am less enthusiastic about dressing a child for promotional purposes.

BTW, I blog at Starbucks... it's a great place to meet people and talk R.E.

I've always heard you have to ask for the business.  I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to earn your living.  As long as its done tastefully, I would not see anything wrong with it.

I had a lady come up to me today at lunch while talking to my client and on a phone call and said you are a real estate agent right. I said yes and she walked away as she noticed I was on the phone. Not sure if she wanted my card or what, but I think anythign that can draw attention to what you do like that and open the line of communication is good.

Hi there,

Cute I guess if you love animans. But with that said, it is an attention getter. And I'm with the philosophy of tacky with kids. Every now and then you see this ads like "buy from my Grandma"...yikes, not a chance I'd do that to mine.

I think it's a cute idea only because I'm a dog person. I seen a lady walking her little dog once and the coat said "Yes, I'm single".  So, there you go!

 Kids?  I don't think so....

Now you have me thinking of something else, get a card made with your dog's pic on it and put something like "My owner sells homes" (have to think on that a while), and leave them at the vet's office.

I agree - if I had kids, I wouldn't - but I think I might just order a doggie shirt!

That's a great idea Ida - I have another one.  How about taking a photo of your dog in a football (or baseball) jersey for the local city or state's team and sending out a postcard mailing with the team's schedule on it.  Something people will stick on their fridge for the whole season.

Personally, and this is just my own humble opinion, but I think the best marketing you've got going is your smile!

Exposure is exposure, I see hey whatever can get the name out right, people might be laughing now but if you just get one client from it, the tables are turned :)
