iUse Less Stuff Day is Thursday, November 17, 2016.
Or as my husband would say...isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black. Everyone I run into is in the process of purging their garages, closets, drawers, storage units and any other hidden areas of items that they no longer need, want, use or still can’t figure out why they bout in the first place.
What can we do?
First- Acquire Less
We spend the First Third of our lives trying to figure out how to get the things we want and see...a new car, purses, houses, jewelry, boats, kayaks, and the list goes on.
The Middle Third is spent acquiring those things now that we have the means to purchase them. And, in the Final Third, we spend time wondering where to put what we have, how to take care of it, why in the world did we buy it in the first place and now, how to rid ourselves of it.
This is coming from someone who can out-shop anyone I know!
But, STUFF is exactly what it is. My suggestion is to collect memories and people instead!
In one of my gift giving little groups, we’ve opted to give consumables for gifts, whether they’re Gift Cards to restaurants or actual food.
Second-Waste Less
Admit it, we’re all wasteful. But if we commit to doing what we can to use what we have in a better way, then it’s a start.
You could make a list that would never end on ways to waste less but here are just a few things that we’ve been doing:
1.Get a Klean Kanteen or something similar instead of plastic water bottles. I have water or green tea with me all day. A few years ago a friend gave me a Klean Kanteen and I’ve been using it ever since. It keeps hot drinks hot and iced drink cold! Think about how many plastic bottles you'll be saving from the landfills.
2.Stop wasting food. We’re fortunate enough to be in an area where there are produce stands and markets nearby. Instead of buying fresh items once a week and throwing away half, we make more trips to the market and buy what we know we’ll use.
3.Recycle. Our landfills are big enough. When we have items that we no longer use or need, they are donated to a local organization.
And please recycle your glass, paper, and plastics. Most of our municipalities offer a weekly pickup of recycled material.
4.Cut down on your use of paper.
Instead of printing something, consider saving it to the clouds.
I love reading different magazines but was tired of the paper. So I subscribe to TEXTURE. There are over 200 magazines available such as Forbes, People,Wine Enthusiast, National Geographic, Architectural Digest, Bloomberg Markets, Coastal Living, Food & Wine, Money, Smithsonian and much more for $9.99 a month. I can read them on my phone, tablet or computer and can share it on up to 5 devices.
There are many more ways we all can all Use Less Stuff.
I hope you’ll share here in the comment section what you're doing to use less stuff.
