Maui County buys a big chunk of the North Shore in Haiku, and promises to make it open space for public use. This is great news for people who want to watch the surfing and windsurfing action at the Jaws surf break in Peahi. This location has been growing in popularity as more and more people want to challenge the famous waves. These days, big wave surfing events are being held which really puts a spotlight on the location. The amount of traffic that comes with an event is incredible, and it's not safe to drive down the rutted roads. Currently people park their cars up at the Hana Highway and walk over a mile to the site, or get shuttled up and down by those who are able to drive on the rough terrain of the old pineapple fields.
On Sept. 20, 2016, Maui County paid $9,495,000 for 267.7 acres, consisting of 4 parcels: 13.5 acres; 37.95 acres; 33.84 acres; and 182.44 acres. The largest parcel is oceanfront, with bluffs overlooking the surf. Rumor has it that the county plans to develop this area into a park with a big parking lot and bleachers, so viewing the big wave events will be a lot easier than it is now.
There's a lot of work ahead, with infrastructure, roadwork, and planning for big changes. We are really happy this purchase worked out before some other entitites bought up the north shore and blocked it from public access. Looking forward to some great things happening on Maui's north shore. How about you? What are you looking for in Haiku?
