We take the time to counsel

Home Stager with Stage It Today 40354912
I just realized after posting a comment earlier that it would be a good thing to blog about.  This weekend I went for a consultation and found myself putting down the clipboard and listening to the homeowner about his "story" as to why he is selling the house.  I went in thinking I could whip through his house and we would only talk about the ways to get his home ready for re-sale... but that didn't happen, again.  I am realizing that in this business, we are also listeners and counselors, too.  He talked about his frustration and saddness and I needed to be there to just listen.  I wonder if you all run into this.  The consultations seem to be way more than"remove this and put this here".  This gives our job more meaning, and blessings await us,  when we can have a cup of coffee and take the time to listen, even if it means staying a little bit longer.

Letitia, I think that was part of my calling was to be a counselor.  I always ask the homeowner why are they selling?  That usually opens them up!  My partner gets mad because I'm a cry baby.  I will sit there and cry with the seller.  Then I go into what drew you to this house.  Then they tell us all the things they loved- it was open - in the daytime we require no lights.

If you can be "present" with a client the way both you and Marci describe, I think that is a great service. So many people are hungry for a personal connection in business and the fact that they trusted you enough to share at that level is a credit to you both. I used to joke that I was going to open up a combination psychotherapy center and hair salon because so many people open up to their stylist.....many who would not dream of talking with a therapist. There is a certain quality that some people have that makes others want to share their feelings and we all know how emotional selling a home can be. Some people are just naturally therapeutic.
