The participation in the ActiveRain 2016 Photography Contest has been awesome. Entries are pouring in and there are so many amazing photos and such wonderful talent on display that our three judges - Kathy Streib, Paul Henderson, and Gayle Rich-Boxman - are going to have a really difficult time picking winners.
There are still two weeks left to get your photos entered, but don't wait until the last minute - if you do it now, we'll have more time to enjoy your submissions.
Of course, neither I nor the judges are eligible to participate, but that doesn't mean I can't post a photo or two anyhow, just to show some solidarity with my AR brothers and sisters. Okay, I'm really doing it because I wanna show off my stuff too.
In 2007, I did a solo backpack trip in India for 5 weeks, something I had always wanted to do. It was an amazing travel experience to be immersed in a culture so different from what I knew. My last week was spent in Varanasi - a truly incredible place, maybe the oldest city in the world, and one of the most sacred Hindu places on earth. As I was wandering the Ghats along the Ganges one afternoon, I ran across these two gentlemen, who asked me to sit and talk with them a bit. We had a fascinating conversation talking about our respective cultures and beliefs, and before I left them to resume my exploration, they asked me to take their picture - it's one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. There is a good reason for the photo title, but I'll leave that to your imagination.
I liked the photo so much that I ran it through a Photoshop filter and had it printed on canvas. It hangs prominently on my office wall today.
