ActiveRain Photography Real Life - Hawaii Splash

Hawaii

On my last trip to Hawaii and I had just purchased a new Nikon camera or which I had no idea how to use - yet.  While there I focused on trying to take a lot of water pictures, especially in rocky places. We had to hike down a ways to get close to the water at this particular spot.  We brought along a picnic lunch and a nice bottle of wine and planned on spending the afternoon on the rocks so it was worth the hike down.

All was quiet for about an hour or so. It was so relaxing just hanging out by the water, enjoying the breeze and light lunch.  Out of nowhere the waves picked up and POOF we got splashed! I loved it as did Gary.  But then it quieted down. I was kind of disappointed because I wanted to capture the big splash in motion.  We hung out for awhile, with my camera in hand (and wine of course) and waited.

Finally I saw 'it' coming and I was able to snap a few photos of the big splash.  I got it!

This is an entry for the Dick Greenberg photography contest - Places. Thanks Dick, it's been a blast going back through photos this evening and picking out just the right one!

Anna- I love learning the why or how of the photos in this contest.  Half the fun of photography for me is in trying for the "catch" waiting as you did for the right shot!

You caught that splash mid-air, Anna!  I've been to Hawaii four times.  I'm convinced that it's difficult to take a bad picture there.  There's entirely too much beauty!

Hi Anna - It couldn't have been too hard to wait for that, given the surroundings and picnic goodies. Thanks for another contest entry!

I have some like this with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew and a King Tide coming together in Florida. The power of the waves is amazing.

Anna Banana, I'm with Kathy Streib, the stories just escalate the photos with what you guys are thinking prior to shooting. This type of picture isn't easy, and YES you got it!
