Tampa Realtor Katrina Madewell - wants to know... Reality Check!

Take a look, your reality check is on the floor!

I was talking to my good friend Cyndee Haydon just the other day when we realized our conversations were very similar in the fact that we will work like mad to bring our clients the VERY best (and I mean the best of the best), and at the end of the day... if someone did not value our time, you stop and think (we sure did)...

  • Did I take precious time away from my children that are begging for my attention?
  • My children are so small now and they WANT me now, it's only a few more years until they are teenagers and don't even want to be around mom and dad, it will be all about their friends.
  • Time is something that can be so easilylost, there's never enough money to make time, but there's always time to make money.  TIME IS IRREPLACEABLE!
  • Are the clients I am working with right now, valuing me as much as my family does?  Do they know exactly when my family time is and do they respect that?
  • Am I treating my family as good as I do my clients?

If you are a work-a-holic, recovering perfectionist, like me, then you know EXACTLY what I am talking about.m

When I was responding to an email that a client sent me, well after midnight, I looked over and on the floor of my home office and there was my oldest daughter sleeping on the floor.  She had fallen asleep on my floor, just waiting for me to help her get to sleep!

What did I realize from this?  Well this was only days before my husband Chris and I celebrated our 10th year wedding anniversary, and it all made me think... Time passes by SO quickly, and my children, myself, and even you... are not getting any younger!  So it impacted me to make some major changes, timing is everything right?

Well, starting next school year, Nicholas will be in Kindergarten, and Madalynne with be in 3rd grade, and I am now officially the PTA President for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year for Pineview Elementary.  Now that I have made a commitment to many people... oh yeah just everyone at the whole school to do my best (in a position I know nothing about) and schedule even more quality time with my kids.

Adaleesa is pre-enrolled for the school year in the same preschool that Nick attends now, and she starts in August.  So this summer is going to be a fun summer, I am going to stop on my lunch and swim with them for 15-30 minutes and play with them, take them to the park on Friday afternoons, schedule them just like I would an appointment, Make sure that clients I work with and give EVERYTHING I have to give will respect my boundaries, accept my advise, and give with their heart, as much as I give with mine, and last but not least make my kids as important as everything else in my life!

  • What has been a few of your most recent reality checks?
  • What would have you changed in the recent months, years?

I would love to hear your thoughts, similar stories, YOUR reality check, and ANYTHING you have to offer that you have found extremely useful with regards to TIME MANAGEMENT.

My reality check is every day when I realize my kids are now grown and don't need mom as much anymore.

Katrina, This is one of the best posts ever. I am constantly going through the same questions in my head. I think as a mother it's really hard not to feel the way you have mentioned. I try to work with most of my clients while the kids are in school. Have fun with your kids this summer and good luck as the PTA president.

Good morning Katrina,

Excellent post, thank you. Like you I had young kids in the beginning of real estate. For me I'm sorry to admite I put them on the back-burner too many times in the name of survival in business. One of my "do-overs" would be to take more time away from business for them. Also as we learn in BRO to "blend" my/our time better.

Thanks Duane

Sandra - thank you so much for the even wider eye opener!

Mana - thanks :) It ALWAYS brightens my day to see you on my blog!

Lynda - I SO appreciate that word of encouragement, any tips for time management 101 for realtors would be great!!!

Jack - Susie (I am sure) and I are happy to help you and Cyndee get away for 2 weeks BECAUSE YOU DESERVED IT!! YOU ARE THE ONLY ONES I KNOW THAT WORK EVEN MORE THAN I DO -ALL OF THE TIME!  Enjoy Alex & Sean, you will NEVER get that time back!  Did you see Lynda's comment above?  That REALLY knocked another one out of the park for me!   I know you would return the favor anytime!

Well, there are unfortunately too many reality checks during the last 5 years and many that are more recent ones that are too numerous to list here.  Yep, I have boys that are 2 and 4 y/o.  I have taken off on Wednesdays and either Saturday or Sundays (or both).  I make it home for dinner 3-4 times per week but still feel a lot of the time that something is missing.  I like your idea of "swim time" and fun time for this summer.  Hmm.  You've given me more food for thought on what I can do to restructure my work/family time.  Great post!

Ahhh....our 4-footed kids are soooo much easier...Cosmo and Magic love watching the colors on the computer...they are patient about their bowls being filled with punctuality....love those litter boxes...and they love snuggling whenever we get to bed !

Well said, Katrina!  You can never get back the time you failed to spend with them, particularly when they are small.  Happoy Belated Mother's Day!

I have had lots of reality checks lately (one was while you were in town and I was out and I do apologize for that!)

My son is graduating high school this year, our 20th anniversary is next year, my 20th high school reunion is this year, my 40th birthday is next year, my daughter is lashing out and needs more supervision.  I can't tell you the magic words to make it all stop but I think you are on the road.

I need to dedicate myself to my profession, kids, husband and immediate family.  It is a matter of learning how to juggle it all.  If you figure it out, let me know   I hope your summer is MOST AWESOME!

wow - great post - actually, in retrospect (which is always fun) had I NOT attempted to open a coffee shop when I left teaching and gotten into real estate immediately- - -  - but it is what it is and we can only move on from here -

Hey Katrina -

You are right on the money!  I think everyone goes through a realzation process like this in their life.  Luckily, you realized this early in your childrens lives.

GREAT POST!!

some of you on here,  know me personally so you know this story was my same "letter from the heart" this month.

while I still look for that same balance myself, and feel bad working late many evenings, I feel so blessed to have every Sunday off with my family, and to have wonderful clients that understand my need to have that time with my family ...

thank you so much for your comments here ...

BUT WHERE THE HECK ARE MY TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS?
