This month, developers have secured a deal regarding the Harborside Events Center property and a new hotel for Downtown Fort Myers. At first glance, you might pass over this piece of news without a second thought. However, it represents something very positive for Southwest Florida real estate. As we’ve seen in previous years, even the smallest change can really have big effects in our area. Everything from property prices to shopping amenities are shaped by these sorts of decisions, and this one is no different.
In 2010, developers had started to look into building a new hotel for our downtown area. But not until 2014 did we start to see traction on this project, and for the most part, it wasn’t the kind we were hoping for. For one, the developer missed deadline. Then the city opted for other avenues. It seemed like our area was growing, and we were having more and more visitors, but a release valve wasn’t being provided for this growth.
Fast Forward to this year, and the city has cashed the check to begin the project with Mainsail Development. This firm has already received its fair share of praise, but what we’re happy to see is that the hotel project is moving forward. While designs must still be brought to the table, this expansion to our downtown core in Fort Myers represents something seemingly small, but in reality, it’s huge. In the past few years, our Southwest Florida real estate market has really been picking up steam.
Every day I talk with clients and vendors who are eyeing our area’s affordable prices and strong growth. As simple as it seems, this hotel will represent a further rejuvenation of our downtown, which will only bring more people into the area. That’s good for property prices and for amenities. I’ll continue to keep an eye on this one for you, but if you’re wondering if now’s the right time for you to buy some Southwest Florida real estate, let’s touch base. You’ll be amazed at some of the opportunities.
