If there is a long way there Donald and I can find it. We drive to our family's home out on the west coast every couple of years and well I am pretty sure we've taken a different path every time. We've traveled with one child cross country and we've traveled with three children cross country. It's always an adventure. Out last visit the route went something like this:
We had planned to go to Dodge City, but it didn't work out that way, instead we traveled further north in Kansas and met up with a friend Donald knew from high school. Then we decided to take the scenic route through the snowy 3 degree rocky mountains to Arches National Park. That's the photo I want to share. If you haven't been... I highly suggest it. And if you are going to walk the "primative" path like I did around the arches then I suggest fall. We could see snow capped mountains near by and it was just in the 40s, but that seems like perfect hiking weather to me.
This is my favorite "travel" photo from that trip (family photos excluded of course because I love my family more than an destination). But that human you can see is my Donald. He's holding the "good camera" in his hand and I snapped this with my phone. The sun was about to set, and just at the right spot to peek through a small hole in the rock formation next to an arch and I love the photo. I haven't ever taken the time to play with it in photoshop to see if I could lighten Donald up any. But I like it in it's purest raw form. I think the best photos are not the composed ones that get the subject perfect, those that are just enough to remind you of that moment in time that you have a treasured memory of with someone you love.
And if you ever visit Arches, don't go on Monday. And make dinner reservations well in advance just south of there in Moab, UT at Desert Bistro. The food was SO good that I didn't snap a single photo. I had sea bass and Donald had Buffalo. Not on their regular menu, but specials that evening. But the bacon wrapped dates.... are a MUST have. And make your reservation for 8 or so because then you can linger and enjoy the great atmosphere.
