What Is It About You?

"To know me is to love me."

As a real estate agent, it is important in the online arena to use a bio or "About You" page to market your professional expertise and YOU as a person.  It is your introduction to your online visitors.

Have you ever been on an online dating site?  I have and when I came across a bio with no picture and very little information about the person, I moved on immediately.  Why would I want to get to know someone who is too lazy to upload a picture and tell me about themself?  How will I know if they are the type of person I might want to get to know or if we have anything at all in common?

I see many AR member Profiles that are blank, or with very little information. Do they not know what to say or are they just too lazy to create a bio?

If you're having trouble creating a bio, here are a few questions to contemplate.  Come up with 3 - 5 answers to each question.  The answers to these questions can create a foundation for your bio.

Who are you?
Why do you do what you do?
Who do you help?
Why should people seek your advice?
What are past clients saying about you?
What makes you different?
What is your formula for helping people?
What skills make you successful?
What awards or recognition have you received
What is something unique about you (not necessarily work related).

Be confident yet humble.
Create professional trust while making it personal.
Make it robust but not too wordy.

If you don't feel confident creating your own bio, don't hesitate to hire a professional copywriter to help you.  One such resource here on ActiveRain is Marte Cliff.   If you don't follow Marte's blog, I highly recommend you do so.

Here are three articles Marte wrote about the subject of agent bios:

If you need a new real estate agent bio,  consider this...

Whether you decide to create your own bio or hire someone to help you, I hope these ideas are useful.

Hi Mike Bjork .  Totally agree about the pics. They need to be updated regularly. I never understood using a glamour photo.  Seems like that is setting people up for a surprise when they see the every day you.  LOL

Hi Kathy Streib .  Yes, people need to make a connection with their eyes and the information that will convince them you are the best agent to help meet their needs.  Thanks for reading and commenting.

Hi Barbara Todaro .  Thanks for reading.  It's an important key to marketing ourselves.  As Sheri Sperry - MCNE® ask:  "If you can't market yourself, how do you market properties? !!"

The current bio pages offer a lot of exposure to fill in our expertise.  The older profile pages and in particular the home age allowed for more info at the very top so that a quick glance would allow a reader to know where the agent was located.  An example, no where on your blog home page do you see what city, state you are from

Very important to have a good 'about me' description.  People want to feel they know a bit about who you are before they contact you. Makes the agent have more of a personality and gives an important first impression

Dear Carol,

In addition to everything about you, think about, who you want to work for. That can develop as you get going in your business. For example, I tend to work with a lot of people from around the world. It is always fun for me to help them with the differences between real estate in the US & wherever they are from. Trying to figure out other languages as they chat is fun too.

Whether you like sailing, horses, condos, farms, certain neighborhoods, a particular employer in the area, or whatever else, see how your skills are unique for serving that population. If you like something and have fun doing it, you will not mind the long hours & the stress half as much.

Hi Carol, thanks so much for the mention and the links. I tried to say so this morning, but all of a sudden my computer went insane. The cursor was jumping all over, pages were closing and opening without my permission, things were being highlighted... it was just crazy.

I had to leave as I was meeting a friend for our annual "Girl's day out," and all day I wondered if I'd come home and have a computer or a melt-down.

Thankfully, tonight it's just fine, so I can say thanks.

I think the most important point is "What makes you special," and I've found that the very best agents don't think the service they provide is special. They just think it's what they should be doing for their clients.

For them, I say "Look at your testimonials." Those will tell you what your clients think is special.

Where does an agent draw a line so their bio is short, relevant and pithy? You encapsulate your business benefits in one sentence, yet most agents aren't able to convey all that they do in even a few sentences.

Always wonder on why people don't add anything in the bio & then grumble when 'blogging' just doesn't work? Good suggestions on how to get the ball rolling with that.

Marte is a favorite read.

I will add to this decent posting that the word "I" is infamous in bio's. Be aware that it is more about the services and products and not the people who do them

Good morning, Ed Silva .  Yes, not being able to see the city and state where an agent works is an oversight for many.  It's all in how the AR profile is filled out.   Thanks for reading.

Good morning, Dorte !   How does the old saying go:  "When you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life?"   I think to truly be good in real estate, you have to have that passion. A lot of people get into the business for the perceived freedom and money.  No doubt that is one reason for the high failure rate amongst newbies.  Thanks for reading and commenting.  Have a great day?

Good morning Marte Cliff .    I remember listening to a speaker once that said: "Don't stay up all night thinking of a new way to say something, when it's been said so well already."  Happy to share your blog posts in my blog, because you said it so well.   Testimonials do  have a powerful impact.

Glad your computer didn't meltdown!  Maybe it needed a rest... while you had a girls day out.   I just ordered a new laptop this week. I hope it lasts as long as this one... 8+ years.  Have a great day!

Hi Kimo Jarrett ,  I don't think a bio needs to be short.  You can create a "tagline" for that.  A bio should be more detailed and always include testimonials!  Thanks for reading and commenting.

Hi Andrew Mooers .  You are so right.  Unfortunately, not everyone is comfortable with doing video which relates to poor presentation.  Better not to do it (IMHO) if you can't do yourself justice.  Thanks so much for your input.
