Lend a Hand, Serving a Veteran on Veteran's Day
I am so glad to have been a part of our annual Clarksville Association of Realtors® service project on Veteran's Day. CAR Gives Back, as we call it, identifies a needy Veteran in our area that we can serve with our resources and collaborative labor and efforts. We are always looking for our next project.
On Veteran's Day, several dozen Realtors® and other volunteers gathered at the home of a deserving disabled Vet. He needed help with his yard, tree trimming and garage organization. We trimmed bushes, low hanging tree limbs, raked leaves, swept and cleaned his garage, driveway and patio, cleaned out his gutters and gave his whole yard a much needed tidying up.
You see his wife was an avid gardener and she passed away last year. He was unable to take care of the plants and yard clean up that was so badly needed from his wheelchair. The many birdhouses and yard ornaments remind him of her and he wants to preserve them to keep her close in his thoughts.
For several hours we worked while our Veteran looked on. He stopped to chat with many of us and told us how much he missed his wife and how lonely he was. When we were done, his home looked like it had a facelift and had taken on new life. He was very happy with the results and was all smiles. We filled a dumpster to overflowing and created a burn pile to burn later when burning will be safer to do. Not only was his yard transformed but his attitude was uplifted, too.
Our Veterans give so much to us so it is a pleasure to give back and do for them. Though many suffered a service-related disability while serving their country, they still have tremendous pride for their country and value their citizenship as sacred. Their service is over and it is now our time to show how much their sacrifices mean to us, our community and our country.
This is my entry in The Annual Pay It Forward Challenge.
