Snow in Hawaii today, 20-39 inches - is it climate change?

By
Real Estate Agent with Resort and Second-Home Specialist REALTOR Broker #21673

Yes, it really does snow in the tropics!

Many people don't realize we have some fairly high mountains here. Mona Kea is nearly 14,000 feet and often gets a dusting of snow in our winter months. The white stuff was a little heavier than normal today but probably not evidence of global climate change. (Look elsewhere for that.)

Kathleen,

I knew that it snowed on the big island, and that it has every climate.  That is what is supposed to happen at the Summit.  A

Oh wow, Kathleen. Never think of snow and Hawaii in the same sentence... but with that elevation, no wonder.

I have rented a jeep for the month so as soon as my husband arrives on Big Island, I'm taking him to the top of Mauna Kea. We've been halfway there before but the road was closed to all but 4-wheel, and now I've got a 4-wheel drive vehicle, so watch out.

Somebody asked me the other day if I wasn't afraid to drive in the snow. Hey, I may live in Sacramento, but I'm from Minnesota!
