Where to Find Natural Shade on South Mountain Trails

Natural shade is one of the treasures on trails in the desert. Most of the vegetation is less than a human height, and the saguaros don't really stay close to offer shade for the hikers.

My discovery yesterday will make me a fan of the Pima Canyon Access trail in the Phoenix's South Mountain Preserve - there was natural shade for most of the hour I spent on the trail (4pm-5pm), provided by the hill on the side of the trail. The trail is easy walking, with changing scenery and views of different parts of Phoenix metro area.

Pima Canyon is located at 9904 S 48th Street near Guadalupe Road, in Ahwatukee, Phoenix AZ 85044.

Living in Northern Virginia, this is not something I would have even thought about. No wonder people who move here from the desert southwest report feeling a little claustrophobic. Our abundance of trees makes a horizon an idea, but offers plenty of shade.

Finding natural shade on the desert isn't something I've thought of before. But, it certainly is worth considering. Using the mountains as shade seems logical!

We have fewer trees here now than we used to but still I am sure many more than the desert I would miss trees being so use to them here in Northern Va.

David Martin , I love trees and we come to appreciate them even more when fewer are around. There is an intiative, Urban Forest, which helps with the trees and shade in urban environments. I also know one person who has promised to himself to plant 500 trees. :)
