May 5 - it's Boy's Day here on Maui - that's when you see the koi flags (koi nobori) flying in people's yard to signify how many boys they have. The largest carp at the top represents the eldest son, while the smallest at the bottom represents the youngest boy. Koi or carp banners are placed on a high bamboo pole in front of the house to symbolizes strength, perseverance, and long life. It's a tradition that comes from Japan, and has rooted here in Hawaii.
