The Rules of Hockey applied to Real Estate...
I love Hockey and I love Real Estate! I support reflection and self monitoring of my industry. I work hard, love my clients, and serve in the community I live in. I believe that we have a HUGE responsibility to attempt to reverse the negative stigma that the media and public have about real estate agents. We can best do this by being transparent and shifting ourselves out of a power mentality and into a service one. We will be replaced if we are not useful. Here is a "funny" blending of my two loves........
The most common area creating confusion for the all realtors is following unspoken rules. Having a better understanding of some of the most common penalties will drastically improve agent's ability to follow the game.
Minor Penalty-(two months)should be called for tripping, hooking, slashing commissions, charging buyers additional fees without making it clear that sellers will not pay them, roughing up the newbies, holding, elbowing, flat fee-ing, and leaving showings with lights on and doors unlocked.
Major Penalty-(five months) should be called for fighting in words or actions next to the copier, or when minor penalties are committed with deliberate attempt to injure. Major penalties for slashing cars and signs, stealing creative ideas from new agents, piggybacking on the hard work of those agents to better your own uncreative marketing, high-sticking, butt-kicking, and cross-checking carry automatic game misconducts.
Misconduct-(ten years) should be called for various forms of unsportsmanlike behavior or when a player incurs a second major penalty in a game. This should be given when an agent is dishonest, disloyal, and power hungry. It should also be given when they are self focused and not willing to use their resources to better the communities they serve in. Additional time should be given if their bad attitudes are creating a rotten community misconception of our industry. The ones who still carry all their MLS data in a red book will be removed from the game.
So, lets play hard. Let's play fair. And remember, stealing the marketing of others is not "borrowing"....it's cheating. Be creative, find your own path and we will all be busy and blessed!
