Grimke School Redevelopment Plan in Limbo After Long Delays

Roadside Development and Sorg Architects have resigned from the Grimke School redevelopment project, citing frustration with long delays and new financing challenges. The project was bid in 2014 and only received approval in early 2016. The planned redevelopment project is located at 1923 -1925 Vermont Ave NW and an adjacent parking lot at 920 U Street NW in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington DC. The former Grimke Junior High School is one of eleven shuttered District schools in various stages of redevelopment through the office of the Deputy mayor for Planning and Economic Development (ODMPED). The project is now on hold until DMPED finds a replacement developer. They are expected to approach 2nd place bidder Community Three Development to see if they are still interested in moving forward. Their proposal included a 10k SF museum, 1,500 SF of U Street Arts League space and a 4,400 SF office space for Torti Gallas architects (see C3 proposal below). If Community Three is no longer interested, the property will be added to the March DMPED annual proposal bidding event.
