Seafarer Memorial Homer Alaska
One of the most loved and visited place on the Homer Spit in Homer Alaska is the Seafarer Memorial. It is across from the Homer Harbor and Overlooks Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet. Homer is a Fishing Community and the meaning of the memorial runs deep.
The Memorial was and is an ongoing community project. Drew Scalzi was largely the creator of the idea for the memorial, "A tribute to the living and the lost" that is such an important reminder is a fishing community. Drew served on the borough was a Alaska state Representative and worked tirelessly to have the memorial completed.
Bricks dedicated to loved ones are added and Brass Plaques inside are for those who die at sea. The man who was so key to the idea and completion of the memorial plaque reads “Drew Scalzi, 1952-2005: He hauled for us all.” Drew Scalzi died not from the Sea he loved but from cancer. The memorial was funded with state grants and community fundraisers. Volunteers provide the labor and Mark Degraffenried designed the 7 foot tall statue of a rugged mariner, ready to throw his dock line. The Monument stands 15 foot high and is 20 foot wide. You can walk up and read the Plaques and Ponder the meaning of it all. Picnic tables are there to sit and enjoy the Beautiful view of Kachemak Bay.
At Christmas the people who love and maintain this memorial decorate the mariner in Christmas lights and show the other side of the hardworking fisherman. The guy who loves his family and will bring light into their lives at Christmas and every day!
Impressive sight as the Sun goes down and the Ocean looms behind with Beautiful Snow covered mountains making a majestic background and the glow of the Christmas Lights.
