Wal MartI went shopping at the Wal-Mart last night in Alpharetta to get a few things and I was surprised to see how empty the store was.  There were no crowds on every aisle as usual.  In fact I thought it was Cinco de Mayo, but even the restaurants around the store were not packed.  When we went to check out another unusual thing happened, I noticed was that no one was at any of the check outs.  In fact the cashiers had walked to the front of their lanes to ask if I was checking out.  I am used to always getting in a line at Wal-Mart, so this was an oddity.  As I left the store the greeter advised me that the store was no longer open 24 hours.  A sign of the times, and the direct result of high gas prices eroding disposable income. 

When you think about it is kind of scary.  Wal-Mart is a big store with loads of perishables - they are now shutting the store for a third of the normal operating hours.  The shoppers are just not out there no matter how cheap Wal-Mart prices are.  Recently I noticed that a lot of the restaurants that I've dined at over the years have closed.  Weekdays, at lunch hour there are fewer lines in most of the local eateries.  Eating out is now a treat, and persons seem to treat themselves on a Friday evening or a Saturday.  Eating lunch out seems to have been curtailed during the week. I guess folks are back to brown bagging.  I'm sure this is not a great time to be in the restaurant business with rising food costs. A few years ago it was very common in Atlanta to buy gas for less than a dollar a gallon.  The Atlanta area at that time boasted itself as the place where dining out was a way of life.  More people dined out than any place in the country.  Those days are long gone.

Times are tough right now! I find myself comparison shopping including shopping at Walmart which is a place I normally wouldn't go because I didn't like the crowds.  We are even thinking of not taking a vacation this year just to be sure there will be enough money for the winter.  I have been blessed with staying busy in Real Estate but I NEVER take it for granted.

This is frightening to me.  I heard today that Home Depot is closing 15 stores that are 'underperforming'.

Jim:  Another sign of the times...  We've been down before and we'll be UP again!  It may take a little longer than we'd like but, things WILL improve and your favorite Wal-Mart will be open 24 hours again.  Remember the nation in your prayers.

 Cynthia Grimes  Since I am from New York, and lived in the Washington DC area for many years, I really got used to being able to go out 24 hours a day.  They are rolling up the sidewalks here pretty early these days.

Kathy Fisher Lexington's ePRO RE/MAX Realtor  Perhaps I could understand Home Depot with the slow down in home sales...but Wal_Mart is pretty basic to your needs.  If people cannot afford to shop there...things are in rough shape.

Debe Maxwell   I always try to remember this nation in my prayers, and I also try to remember our leaders.  I am really surprised how no one is protesting.  I spoke to a friend of mine today in the Atlanta area he is a nation wide trucker just laid off today along with 40 other drivers that are beneath him in seniority.

Jim:  The most amazing thing to me is how quickly the changes have come upon us.  We all knew the economy has been slowing for a couple of years, but most of all this evidence has happened fairly recently.  I suspect that all of us have wanted to hang on to the good times as long as we could.  Even now I hear skepticism from everywhere that this is only temporary.  It will pass quickly and we will be back in the good times by next year.  I am not so sure.  I suspect we are seeing something akin to the 1920-1940 era in American History, although I hope we are not headed towards...  Dare I say it?  The "D" word?

Steve Homer  I agree with you.  I think the straw that broke the Camel's back was oil.  Unlike the 1920-1930's this had a major greed component.  No money down?  Bad credit OK?  No job?  That's OK, we will lend you the money anyway.  If this was a Mafia group we'd have major prosecutions and calls for fraud.  Since the banks perpertrated this malicious fraud...they will probably get a bailout with our taxpayers money.

Jim, The Northwest seems to be relatively strong yet.  We are not seeing the significant negative effect yet.  Things have slowed some I guess but I haven't seen the signs that you describe... YET anyway.

Just a few months ago the Avondale Mall (former store) new Walmart had ~10,000 job applicants WITHOUT even normal media job advertising before the store was open for business! Walmart like everyone else is now watching their pennies and only conducting business when it makes sense (pun intended) and thus reduced hours!

phil  They are no dummies, and also see when there are no sales that their overhead is a drain on profits.  It is sad when buyers cannot afford to shop at Wal-Mart...it is sort of like they are too broke to go out.
