7 Holiday Safety Tips
Tis the season to be jolly. But, don't forget to stay safe also. So, here's some great tips from Amanda S. Davidson for keeping safe during the holidays:
7 Holiday Safety Tips
The holidays bring good times with family and loved ones, delicious food, and time to relax and recharge for 2017. It’s a wonderful time of year! It’s also a time of year that we need to make sure we’re mindful of safety items so that we keep ourselves, children, pets, and our homes safe.
Leave The Lights On – with holidays come lots of travel and you’ll want to be sure you leave the lights on at home while you’re away. It’s inexpensive to purchase a timer to put them on. Be sure to select a light in a location that doesn’t allow anyone to sit and look into the home and determine that no one is home.
Package Delivery – everyone knows there are a lot of packages being delivered this time of year. If you can’t be home to receive them when delivered request they be held at the delivery facility or request signature confirmation. You can also partner with a neighbor to bring each other’s packages in on different days.
Decorations – there’s nothing like a home or business decked out for the holidays with trees, lights, and decor. They’re all gorgeous but, they can also be dangerous. Never leave tree lights on if no one is there to keep an eye on things. Extension cords also need to be used with caution, make sure there are no exposed wires and the plug you’re using isn’t overloaded.
Cooking – whether you’re frying a turkey or just cooking extra food in general make sure you have the proper setup. Things can get chaotic when putting on a meal for a lot of people. It’s also important to keep the kids and 4 legged friends away from a hot stove or hot dishes.
Travel – if you’re going to be away for more than a day ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your home. This will avoid solicitations or packages piling up. Do not post anything on social media about being away. You never know who is watching and those wonderful holiday photos can wait to be posted until you’re home.
Social Media – speaking of social media let’s not forget that you don’t want to post your new diamond ring or massive TV that Santa brought you on social media outlets. Again, you never know who might see your post and it’s not worth risking your or your homes safety over.
Trash Disposal – be sure not to advertise to everyone driving by what you received for Christmas. Take time to properly break boxes down and put them in dark trash bags to avoid the risk of a thief cruising by and then coming back later to break in.
