Wilma Mankiller
November 18, 1945 to April 6, 2010
Writer, Author, Tribal Chief of Cherokee Nation
A few years back during the fall, I visited the Hopi Reservation for a couple of days. It was a chance to connect with the Native American culture. The Hopi Tribe inhabited Northern Arizona and there were always references to this nation of people. Over the years I have visted ruins and petroglyph sites from the Hopi Tribe and their predecessors. I decided to visit them and learn about their culture. It was a fascinating trip I will not soon forget. The Navajo Nation reservation also inhabits Northern Arizona. While this has nothing to do with Wilma Mankiller, it adds a little context as to why I am writing this.
I purchased a book, "365 Days of Walking The Red Road" (The Native American Path To Leading A Spiritual Life Every Day), by Terri Jean. For each day of the year, there is a passage or tidbit of information for the reader to ponder. Today, December 14, is a historical day within the Cherokee Nation and I thought I would share it.
One More Thought...
Many may be wondering where the surname "Mankiller" came from. It is a traditional Cherokee military rank. Wilma Mankiller was a great leader who moved her nation forward by founding the Cherokee Nation Community Development Department among many other achievements.
Had I not moved to Sedona, I may not have generated a curiosity for the rich history the Southwest and the Native American culture that is embedded into our nation.
