Throwback Thursday The Acropolis in Athens Greece

By

We have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel to some interesting locations.  One of them was Greece back in the early 90's.  It is a country with  strong sense of history and cultural heritage. Centered in Athens is a hilltop known as the Acropolis.

This flat topped area encompasses over 7 acres and at one time was occupied by 4 large buildings.

The years have taken their toll and all but one are left in any resemblance of structure, and that would be the Parthenon, which was a large temple built to honor the Greek Goddess, Athena.

The area is accessible with a walk from the lower levels directly from the market place or agora.

The building is constantly under staging and either for support of the structure, or some rebuilding.  The day we walked uo there, we must have just gotten there before the workers had taken a break.  Either for lunch or just a quick repast.

We did manage to capture of one of the locals sitting.  Must have gotten tired after all the time spent inside.

We all reach that point eventually.  Greece is a lovely country to explore, and just maybe we'll get a chance to go again someday.

Lovely photos, Ed. Been there several times. I'll never forget the first time I was there, two women walked past me and one asked in this heavy Brooklyn accent "hey, what is this place anyway?" And her companion answered in an equally heavy Brooklyn accent "I don't know, some museum or something." True story!

Spent 2 weeks in Athens in early 1980s with my wife.  There was so much to see and some really great food and nice people.  Memory of trip...rental car breaking down in downtown Athens on Friday night during rush hour. It was a small Fiat so a couple of guys picked it up and sat it on the sidewalk (and called rental car comapny for us!)!

Those are amazing pictures of the Acropolis in Athens, Ed!  That last picture with the statue sitting among the ruins at the base, is riveting.

This is beautiful! I've always dreamed of going to Greece. Did you hear on the news yesterday there was a Lost City discovered in Greece dating back 2,500 years ago? That's would be a great incentive for you and your wife to go back there and it's on my bucket list!

Your photographs are very beautiful. You inspire me to follow my dreams!!!

OH, Ed! You've been holding out on me. I had great intentions of getting married in Greece, but at the time (16+ years ago), it was harder to try and make that happen online, so I gave up and we headed for Maui. I certainly don't regret the perfect ceremony and time there (and I mean PERFECT) as far as our wedding and honeymoon, but my draw towards Greece is still somewhat strong.

Loved your post on this!!! Future Tuesday Travelogue-worthy!!

That statue looks like it should be in a museum rather than out in the elements.

Thanks for sharing your photos.  I'm glad you had the opportunity to go there.  Greece is on my bucket list.
