The Rule of 1/3's Will Always Win With Display Shelves

Here is what I tell my clients (or do for them) - when working with display shelves, use the rule of 1/3's. A third books, a third accessories (not personal photos if you are selling!), and a third SPACE.  Here are a few examples (these were all vacant houses, so it is my inventory in the photos):

Hi Tori,

What great advice, and so simple too. Thanks, I'll be using this in the future.

That's pretty clever and plan on using that for my house! Thanks for the tip!

Lynda and LaNita -- thanks for reading the post! You can really get creative with the arrangements, too.

What a great tip - I am clueless when it comes to design/staging ideas like these.  Thanks for the simple rule of thumb.

Hi Tori,

Great advice.  That makes it nice and simple to remember, which is great for us guys!

Bookcases are always alot of fun to do.  They don't need to be jammed packed.

Bo & Bill - you can add more items to the shelves if the room overall is less crowded, or remove items from shelves if there is a lot going on in the room already. Stacking books on their sides can be helpful, too.  Photos are great to leave with a client if you don't have another professional on hand to help.

Cindy - they absolutely don't have to be jam packed!  The more upscale the better.

Tori or shall I say "Omaha's Premier Home Stager Blogger" - great stuff!  It looks like you made quite a point bump lately!  Awesome!

Tori, that's a great guideline, easy to remember and foolproof. Add scale to that somehow, littlle piddly stuff on big floor to ceiling bookcases drives me crazy. I can see from your photo's that you understand what I mean by that, you've to fill that one third with acessories that don't make it look cluttered

Hi Tori,

That is a great way to see it.  I will do mine like that.  It makes sense and they look nice.  Thanks again.

Tori, the 1/3 concept looks crisp and clean, great point.

Thank you for this advice, I had no idea what the rule of thumb was and this will really help me with those listings I can't convince to use a stager.

Tori,

What a great, clear way of putting it and you can't go wrong!

Good to know for the next time I try to arrange my shelves.  I am alway re-oraganizing things and driving my husband crazy.  Hee hee

great advice and very simple to help them remember what to do. I always HATE when I have bookcases and shelves in vacants because this alone can eat up a ton of inventory.

I keep re-reading this to help me remember!  I love easy rules.

You're right, Phyllis - hauling a set of encyclopedias or a bunch of books to a vacant is a pain!

Great advice, Tori!  It can be so easy to over run shelves or bookcases. You definitely have to leave an equal amount of space to give the eyes time to rest.

Your pictures are great, a wonderful example of staging bookcases.  Well done!
