It is a Gift-giving season!

What should you gift?

The Fruitcake Lives On - Re-Gifting a Holiday Tradition

What do you do with the Christmas Holiday gifts you receive and cannot use?

Do you re-purpose them?

We all know what re-purpose means … the “re-gifting” that happens with the dreaded fruitcake and other items we receive during the holidays.

A generous heart wants to give. At the core of my heart I feel that when I give it is the thought behind the gift that matters more than the actual gift. I am always honored when I receive a gift. It says to me that the person cares enough and/or likes me enough (in some cases appreciates me enough) to want to give me a gift.

Often our hearts want to give to people we don’t know well. So what do we get them? Unless I know what the person would like I typically focus on a gift that I would like but that does not always work either.

Let’s say for example we know the person drinks wine but we don’t know if they prefer red, white, pink, yellow or green. (Yellow and green wine is type of wine we have never heard of.)

A bottle of wine may be a safe gift because even if the person does not drink they likely know someone who does … and they can pay-it-forward with a re-gift.

How about a pair of movie tickets? I would imagine most people go to the movies. If not, they likely know someone who does and they can pay-it-forward with a re-gift.

I personally do not re-gift. I will donate items or ask friends “do you want this” and explain that I received it as a gift and simply do not have a use for it.

What types of things do you receive as gifts that you likely will never use?

What do you do with them? Do you re-purpose and re-gift them?

Or do you save them for the famous “White Elephant” gift exchange? Those are so much fun ... aren't they?

Wishing you the Happiest of Holidays!

Hi Praful - a good repost because sometimes we get things we can't use.  It hasn't happened to me that often.

Thanks, Grant Schneider.

Some gifts we can rarely use - better to give it to someone who can make use of it.

I can tell you that I would never regift a fruit cake... and fortunately no one has seen fit to gift me with one of those in decades! I have been known to regift bottles of alcohol and wine, as I don't drink.

Nina Hollander - I do not drink either - so regifting wine bottles is okay! (Though I do not get many wine bottles either - they know about this.)
