A Detour Today, On Being An Angeleno and Living in La La Land

I am an Angeleno.  Born here yet have lived in other places in California too. I have a hillside perspective today but I have had an ocean view too. This is a pretty diverse place. In geography.  In demographics. In lifestyle. And, believe me, not everyone is blonde and tanned either although generalities about Los Angeles continue.

And despite living outside the city limits at times, I was often identified as a Los Angeles resident even when my driver license stated otherwise.  I left the state for the other coast yet it was often simpler to be introduced as “from Los Angeles”.  And like the swallows who return to Mission San Juan Capistrano each spring, which by the way is also not in Los Angeles, I eventually came back too.

Recently I attended the opening of La La Land.  It’s the new movie starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Music.  Dancing.  Some romance. Suspended reality to be sure. Incredible cinematography to say the least. It may not be your taste but since I enjoy movies and this city, it was a film that has been on my radar since I first read about it some time ago.

But this is not a movie review, per se, and although I did like it(a lot) it served as a reminder of the many things I enjoy about this place. Home. Except without the dancing and singing in this screenplay of mine called life.

Pasadena California

In the movie, there are scenes near my neighborhood.  The currently shuttered Rialto theatre and the stores, restaurants and other businesses along South Fair Oaks Avenue in South Pasadena.  The Colorado Street Bridge nearby in Pasadena.   The Griffith Observatory in Los Feliz. And more. Lots more. Maybe familiar to you too.   And, since this is a story about Los Angeles - you will see a freeway scene like nothing before.

Movies can serve as escapism.   Or a time to think...reflect.  Other things can do the same, of course. But this is Hollywood(more or less) and this post was inspired by a movie.  And living in La La Land.  Thank you for indulging me with this short detour today.

Hi Michael, I've visited La La Land once or twice, sometimes, that's exactly what I need and enjoy the visit but only a short time. I've enjoyed this post with a twist very much!

Michael- this movie has been on my list to see.  I've been to L.A. twice but never long enough to get to know it as you have.

Michael Jacobs - you took me back in time and I got a little knot in my stomach. My first apartment was on Maple St and I used to go to the Rialto all the time - they always played the newest movies.

Many people don't like Los Angeles (and I never lived in the city proper)  but it will always be dear to me.  Thanks for the ride!

Hey MJ-congrats on the feature. I too share your passion for home. Every time I see a film or tv show with Miami in it it excites me. This film looks visually great and I am looking forward to seeing it. Whats not to like about Ryan Gossling and Emma Stone.

Hi Margaret Goss -- I knew you had a San Gabriel Valley connection but didn't know you ever lived in South Pas. Did you live on the section of Maple Street between Huntington Drive and Meridan or south of Huntington Drive east of Fremont?

By the way, the ownership of The Rialto changed in 2015 and hopefully the funds and city approval will make it a grand theater once again.

I have what I call my "homesick" movies - all the ones set in NYC where I can start pointing at the screen yelping "I know EXACTLY were that is." Then my "tourist" movies, the ones set in places I've come to love but it's never quite home - Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco. Baltimore deserves some movies, but I don't know any set in Baltimore. I've spent enough time in DC I'll include it, but haven't tried to find DC movies I'd like. Can you tell I've traveled around just a bit? So thank you for a reminder of the power of movies. Tonight, given the season, maybe I'll try to persuade my 12-year-old to eat some popcorn with me for "A Miracle on 34th Street."

Oh, and wow the Rialto looks grand. Let's have a game: name cool grande dame movie theatres across the country. I'll start: The Loew's Paradise in the Bronx, NYC.

Lauren Williams -- I remember when I lived in Washington, DC and watching No Way Out which was set in the District(plus Baltimore and Annapolis) with people laughing at the screen when the movie showed some driving scenes that were definitely not based on the reality of some of the portrayed D.C. neighborhoods.

Speaking of Baltimore --- there were quite a few John Waters movies including Hairspray and Serial Mom which were both set and filmed in and around Baltimore too.   I'm sure expert Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland can name lots more.

OHMIGOSH, SHAME ON ME for forgetting THE John Waters! Especially since me, the native Nu Yawker, ought to remember Hairspray making it to Broadway!

Michael I really enjoyed this blog!  I feel like LaLa Land will be my favorite movie this year--will see it over the holidays.  I like movies set on a real city location. I'm a fan of Insecure on HBO--which is set in LA and has some nice shots of certain city landmarks. Now if only MIllion DOllar LIsting LA would focus more on the homes rather than the personal lives of the agents!!!!

This was a fun read, Michael. I have always enjoyed movies about LA and life here, whether serious or humorous. There are certainly lots of generalizations and it's interesting how some moves bring those to light. And sometimes they are somewhat subtle so that only those who live her get them.

Sounds like a fun movie. I will be the lookout. I'm no Angeleno, in part by being in Carlsbad, but I finally have been here long enough, and read enough on AR from people like yourself, that I've learned a bit and it doesn't feel strange.

Good evening, Michael Jacobs - I've always enjoyed my trips to and through L.A. on my way to Palm Springs. Mostly, though, my friends from L.A. come and visit me here in Hawaii. Sorry, that's all I got.
