Three Seashells and One Hermit Crab imageOne of These Things Is Not Like the Others-Seashell Number Two

by San Jose REALTOR Michelle Carr Crowe

In my prior post "4 Seashells From Waikiki Beach-Can You Guess Which One Is Different?" I shared a photo of four seashells from the seashore at Waikiki Beach.

Then I asked readers, "Without consulting Google, can you tell which one of these shells is different from the other three seashells?"

Counting from the top center, the round cream colored shell is #1, the small brown and white spiral is #2, the larger brown and white shell is #3 and the small black, lavender and rose shell is #4.

As promised, here is the surprising answer (at least it was to me)!

As you can see in the photo, Seashell #2 (on the far right) has grown legs and is walking away-because inside of it is a hermit crab! My sweet husband kindly went and returned the little guy to the beach.

Thank you for reading "One of These Things Is Not Like the Others-Seashell Number Two".

Those are beautiful shells! I wouldn't have known there was a live crab in one of them. Very cool.

How funny!  Of course, not for your husband who had to take it back to the beach.  Who would have thought? !!

Hi Michelle -- very interesting.  This is yet another example of perception and way we see things on the "surface" may actually be quite different upon closer examination.

Aloha Michelle, Mahalo for returning the Unauna back to the ocean. Hawaiian Hermit Crabs are not terrestrial and do not live very long out of the water as they have gills and must have water to breath. Unauna are an extremely important part of our Eco system here in Hawaii and there presence is essential in maintaining the health of the reefs here. Tourists often collect the snail shells Unauna use for homes which makes it even more challenging for there survival. A hui hou.

That is so neat that you found a hermit crab. I'm glad you returned the little creature to it's home.

Yes I thought I was being careful, I didn't want to take any live creatures-I was surprised when the shell started walking!
