The Best Hospitals in the DC Metro Area - Are You Relocating?

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Capital Properties DC AB15253

Are you thinking of relocating to the DC Metro area? There are so many questions to answer.  Where should you live? What will you do with your free time? Where will your children go to school? Where do you find a hospital or doctors? There are so many questions to ask - so many things to evaluate! You need to find a Realtor you can trust who can help you with a soft landing in your new hometown!

Here is some information about the best hospitals in the DC Metro area according to this year's US News and World Report ranking of DC hospitals:

The best hospital in the Washington DC area , according to the US News and World Report, is Georgetown University Hospital, operated by Medstar.  This hospital is a not-for-profit, acute care teaching and research hospital with 609 beds located in Northwest Washington, near the French Embassy.

MedStar Georgetown's centers of excellence include neurosciences, transplant, cancer and gastroenterology. Along with Magnet® nurses, internationally recognized physicians, advanced research and cutting-edge technologies, MedStar Georgetown's healthcare professionals have a reputation for medical excellence and leadership.

Georgetown Lombardi's world-renowned Research Faculty are discovering cancer risk factors, designing effective prevention strategies, and learning how to detect cancers earlier. They are developing and testing the cancer treatments of tomorrow - targeted therapies that will improve both survival and quality of life. They are making progress toward the ultimate goal: to eradicate cancer.

I am partial to Georgetown University Hospital.  My daughter was born there and I received great care all through my pregnancy (I was an "older" mother, so I really appreciated the attention I received.) My cousin also was at Georgetown for an extended illness and his nurses and doctors were fantastic.  It really is a wonderful hospital.

MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, MD is ranked nationally in 1 adult specialty. It was also high-performing in 4 adult specialties. It scored high in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes. MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is a 275-bed general medical and surgical facility with 16,091 admissions in the most recent year reported. It performed 2,397 annual inpatient and 6,269 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had 65,045 visitors last year.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a general medical and surgical hospital in Washington, DC. It performed nearly at the level of nationally ranked U.S. News Best Hospitals in 5 adult specialties. MedStar Washington Hospital Center has 763 beds. The hospital had 37,560 admissions in the latest year for which data are available. It performed 11,780 annual inpatient and 11,725 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had 90,719 visits. MedStar Washington Hospital Center is a teaching hospital.

Virginia Hospital Center is a general medical and surgical hospital in Arlington, VA, with 357 beds. It is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Survey data for the latest year available shows that 65,054 patients visited the hospital's emergency room. The hospital had a total of 21,358 admissions. Its physicians performed 5,629 inpatient and 10,644 outpatient surgeries.

Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA is ranked nationally in 1 pediatric specialty. Inova Fairfax Hospital is a 926-bed general medical and surgical facility with 47,442 admissions in the most recent year reported. It performed 13,177 annual inpatient and 16,418 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had 142,794 visits. Inova Fairfax Hospital is a teaching hospital.

Suburban Hospital is a general medical and surgical hospital in Bethesda, MD. It performed nearly at the level of nationally ranked U.S. News Best Hospitals in 1 adult specialty. Suburban Hospital has 235 beds. The hospital had 14,171 admissions in the latest year for which data are available. It performed 5,835 annual inpatient and 6,644 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had 45,063 visits.

Suburban is now owned by Johns Hopkins, so it has really ramped up its physician profiles and the level of care provided.  Located close to NIH and the Walter Reed Medical Center, it is very convenient if you live in Montgomery County.  It has an excellent pediatric emergency room, which is separate from the adult emergency room.  It is hard enough to take a child to an emergency room for treatment without worrying about what tragedy they are going to see while they are there.

There are lots of hospitals in the DC metro area which are not ranked in the top six by the US News and World Report.  For instance:

SIBLEY HOSPITAL in NW Washington DC at MacArthur Blvd and Dalecarlia Parkway

Sibley has a long history in NW Washington as a local neighborhood hospital with good doctors and friendly staff.  It has grown over the last few years and now offers an assisted living facility and an excellent womens' breast clinic.  It was recently purchased by Johns Hopkins so it now is part of the ever growing Johns Hopkins network. I am fond of Sibley because that is where my son was born 38 years ago!

Sibley Memorial Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, in Northwest Washington, D.C., has a distinguished history of serving the community since its founding in 1890. As a not-for-profit and full-service community hospital, Sibley offers medical, surgical, intensive care, obstetric, oncology, orthopaedic and skilled nursing inpatient services, as well as a 24-hour Emergency Department. Sibley’s campus is also home to Grand Oaks, an assisted living residence; a medical building with physician offices and ambulatory surgery and imaging centers; and the new patient tower with 200 spacious, private rooms

The GW Hospital is famous for being the hospital that treated Ronald Reagan after the assasination attempt by John Hinckley.  The building was rebuilt in 2002 and now offers a technologically advanced facility for a multiplicity of clinics including robotic surgery.  GW Hospital is just minutes from all the tourist facilities in Washington, such as the White House and the Kennedy Center.  It is close to Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom and Georgetown.

Washington is blessed to have an excellent children's facility at 111 Michigan Avenue, near the Veterans Hospital. Children's is one of the children's hospitals most highly ranked in the US by US News and World Report. Children's ranks nationally in the top 10 among pediatric hospitals in neonatology, neurology/neurosurgery, and orthopaedics.  Children's Hospital also offers a cystic fibrosis center.   The center is a Level III CF center and a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation designated care center, the only one in the immediate Washington, DC, area. CF care centers are part of a nationwide network of CF providers who meet the highest standards in expert clinical care and support for CF patients and their families.

Lise, I had my knee replacement done at Georgetown, and I was awed by the skill of the surgeon (Mark Zawadsky) and the care I received.  The food sucked, but I wasn’t really thinking a lot about food!
