Our family has had a great Christmas with lots of loved ones around, and throughout Christmas day I realized that there were many lessons to learn. For instance,
- No matter how old you are, you're still your parent's children. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but they do tend to want to take care of you at any age.
- I treat my sons the same way my parents treat me. They're still my boys. Just now, they have much more expensive tastes.
- I retain cookies.
- No matter how much restraint I have an hour before dinner, I have none at dinner.
- Holiday dinners are a great time to keep the family oral tradition alive. The next generation needs to know the family history.
- A post dinner nap is non-negotiable.
- The speed at which you open presents does not change the impact of the gift inside.
- Surprises are surprises. My youngest son has mentioned numerous times how surprised he was with his gifts. He told us he didn't have anything in particular that he wanted so just surprise him. We did!
- The smells of Christmas are different than any other smells.
- There is less traffic through town on Christmas day. Superbowl Sunday is the only other day our community shuts down voluntarily (except for pizza delivery guys).
- Even a 12" tall Christmas tree will make you smile.
- A Christmas card from an old friend will make you feel warm inside.
- There is nothing like seeing the smile on a loved one's face when he/she opens a greatly desired gift.
- A Christmas hug seems warmer.
- Christmas dinner could be pizza if you're surrounded by loved ones.
So, what lessons will you learn this Christmas? I'm sure there are some old ones you're looking forward to experiencing all over again. Have a wonderful Christmas, and let's expect great things in the New Year.
