Christmas Lessons

Our family has had a great Christmas with lots of loved ones around, and throughout Christmas day I realized that there were many lessons to learn. For instance,

  • No matter how old you are, you're still your parent's children.  That's not necessarily a bad thing, but they do tend to want to take care of you at any age.
  • I treat my sons the same way my parents treat me.  They're still my boys.  Just now, they have much more expensive tastes.
  • I retain cookies.
  • No matter how much restraint I have an hour before dinner, I have none at dinner.
  • Holiday dinners are a great time to keep the family oral tradition alive.  The next generation needs to know the family history.
  • A post dinner nap is non-negotiable.
  • The speed at which you open presents does not change the impact of the gift inside.
  • Surprises are surprises.  My youngest son has mentioned numerous times how surprised he was with his gifts.  He told us he didn't have anything in particular that he wanted so just surprise him.  We did!
  • The smells of Christmas are different than any other smells.
  • There is less traffic through town on Christmas day.  Superbowl Sunday is the only other day our community shuts down voluntarily (except for pizza delivery guys).
  • Even a 12" tall Christmas tree will make you smile.
  • A Christmas card from an old friend will make you feel warm inside.
  • There is nothing like seeing the smile on a loved one's face when he/she opens a greatly desired gift.
  • A Christmas hug seems warmer.
  • Christmas dinner could be pizza if you're surrounded by loved ones.

So, what lessons will you learn this Christmas?  I'm sure there are some old ones you're looking forward to experiencing all over again.  Have a wonderful Christmas, and let's expect great things in the New Year.

I can fully relate to that line about having great restraint before dinner, and then finding it absent during the meal.  My scale just told me to remove the small elephant before stepping on.

Mike all good lessons, not sure I can comply with all of them there are a few I actually practice. On a side note loved Myrl Jeffcoat  comment so with that said lesson to Myrl get rid of scale, Endre

Good morning, Mike... what wonderful lessons to pass on to all of us and I can personally relate to each and everyone of these. While it made my crazy when my Mom was alive, for the past 18 years I've wished each Christmas that I could be someone's child. Thank you for the share and reminder.

Good morning Mike. I really enjoyed your observations here. I missed my parents and others gone too soon but enjoyed the small family I do have.

Mike, your post made me smile. I can tell you had a wonderful day with your beautiful family. It was nice to unplug yesterday and just have good old fashioned conversation. I love watching the dogs open their gifts, their joy is contagious. I don't have any restraint at dinner either and all those calories were well worth it =)

Hi Mike - Christmas dinners are certainly filling.  I wish I could take a nap but the beat goes on with our group.
