The Most Popular Word...

By

Wouldn't you agree that TEXTING is one of the most popular words in the English language today? It became a common word a few years ago; everybody knows it, and it seems that practically everybody uses it and uses texting as activity.

I am no longer surprised when my octogenarian clients assure me that they accept text messages.

I remember the time when I told an agent in South Florida that I sent him documents by email, and he kept saying he had not received anything. And after doing it again and again, I finally asked him what exactly he was doing, and he explained that he went to the room with a computer there and was sitting and waiting. There was nobody else in the office to help him. He simply read me the email address from the card...

And when I asked him, whether he had computer on, he was surprised and asked whether he was supposed to...

True story, not a joke...

It seems like technology adds words to the language, and goes fast. At least if you use the word "texting" in your AR blog, you will see that it is not in the dictionary yet.

My kids still don't realize that cell phone was originally created so that we could call each other...not text.

Jon- this is a good candidate for one of Dorie Dillard Monday Techie posts. Who uses a phone to call someone anymore??

Hi Jon - A couple of years ago, texting was something that other people did. I started out of necessity because of my clients and other agents, and now I think I use it more often than e-mail, which was my go-to for so long. And phone calls? fahgettaboudit! Happy holidays!

Good evening Jon.  I have now embraced texting as I can do it from my computer and don't have to rely on my fingers on the stupid phone keyboard.

Les & Sarah Oswald - so true. Things were simpler. A typewriter was just that, a typewriter. If you press a button with the letter A on it, you would type a letter A. Computer is very different. There are so many options when you press any button.

So, when phones are everything and anything, I am now more surprised if you can't do something with it.

Kathy Streib - I finally do not need to fight my wife any more. She used to call our son and if he did not take it right away, she would leave a message. I kept telling her not to leave any messages, as he never has time to listen to messages.

I was telling her to text him. Funny, but texting gets to him and he hates messages.

The only problem is that he dictates his messages and what I get on my end I sometimes fail to deci :)pher

Dick Greenberg - I was not a pioneer, either... Same as blogging. But nowdays it is not that you decide to embrace the technology, it simply takes you hostage :)

Happy Holidays!

Jon loved the post and the picture to illustrate it. Every time I am in the car at a red light everyone's head is down and a gentle blaring on the horn reminds all that the Green light is about to turn yellow and red again.... thanks to that word it takes me 15 min longer to go anywhere in Los Angeles:))Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. - interesting, but we thought that when people got the chance to speak on the phone whenever they could, writing would simply die. We thought that writing and emailing was because we could not always call and talk. turns out that the phone is a primary tool for... writing :)

Go figure

Endre Barath, Jr. - you are right, but it is the closest to it. Would be fun if we would shift to handwriting, but it is highly unlikely :)

Debe Maxwell - well, time changes us. About 10 years ago I did not understand the meaning of the word "blog". Texting is relatively new thing for me, too.

And yes, my older friends now are well versed in all that.

For certain, leaving a message is a waste of time. Texting is so instantaneous although I still don't like to use it for long paragraphs. It gets on my nerves to type out something so long.

Jill Sackler - I hear you. And I hate getting very long messages, and when I do, I try to get the idea rather than read line by line. Texting is not for War and Peace :)
