Weihenstephan: The Oldest Brewery in the World!
The other day I was walking in Santa Monica, CA and on my way to my car and there were a few eye-catching signs which caught my attention. When I saw this sign, great memories flashed back to me from my days of living in Germany.
First, I thought how interesting that the inviting Billboard was written in German rather than in English. Then I remembered when I lived in Germany, that the Breweries used to compete in updating or remodeling the various local Restaurants. In turn they wanted to have their wares prominently featured. Some proprietors would only allow them to provide them with signs others went with mirrors, light fixtures all the way to a total remodel.
Since I was busy I did not have time to stop in, instead this will now be on my list to check out from the inside once it is beer season. As you might now me, I only drink beer when it is very warmJ.
Now if you are not familiar with the Weihenstephan Abby, it was a Benedictine monastery, dating back to the early 700 AD and sometime around 1040 AD the brewery was formed and has been operating continuously producing great beers. Fast forward to the early 1800’s the State of Bavaria took over and the brewery became secularized.
Then in the early 1920’s it was modernized and become known as the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan. When this took place, they joined forces with the Technical University of Munich and it became a state of the art production facility and a enter for learning. People from all over the world come to learn the art and science of beer brewing.
Now the only thing better than going to this little restaurant in Santa Monica, CA to taste the Weihnetephan beers, would be to go back to Germany and take the tour a hundred years later just like I did when I was living in Germany. I still remember clear as day, how much fun I had the last time. The reward of completing the two-hour tour or so was at the end. They were waiting with a couple complementary beers for us. I am sure this tradition is still there, they might have cut it down to one beerJ.
