Jan. 1, New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge

Come to swim, or just dip your big toe in the big blue… without turning blue. Share in the joy of the New Year and the warmth of good friends, fellow swimmers, and great potluck food (cider and coffee will be provided). Please bring your favorite chili (suggested), soup, and/or warm food to share as well. We also suggest bringing warm clothes, hats, footwear, and a camera. This event is for La Jolla Cove Swim Club (LJCSC) members only; however, membership is just $20 a year. Refer to website for details.

Jan. 7, San Diego Resolution Run

Resolve to begin 2017 in motion. The San Diego Resolution Run 5K and 15K will have you racing through Mission Bay Park’s beautiful De Anza Cove and looping around Fiesta Island on our 5K or 15K courses while keeping resolutions to stay fit, get outside, help the planet, and be social. Organizers work hard to keep the Run’s impact low through Earth-friendly race management practices. Proceeds will benefit San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project. Refer to website for registration.

Experience San Diego’s rich cultural diversity and traditional heritage through live music, dance performances, storytelling, children’s activities (drum circles, face painting and crafts), and a wide range of ethnic vendors. The Festival will include a variety of entertainment from Native American, Asian, Cajun, Latin, Jazz and Afro-Cuban bands. This is a free event.

Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Parade

Join us for one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the U.S. to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The parade is filled with dazzling floats, phenomenal high school bands, drill teams, colleges, fraternities, sororities, churches, and peace and youth organizations. This parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the oldest African American fraternity in America, founded in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Dr. King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. This is a free event.
