Words to Live By - It's "About Time."

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

One of our favorite movies is a British comedy-drama called, "About Time."  The premise, on his 21st birthday, a young man learns from his father he has the ability to travel back in time.  Apparently, it's a gift that only the men in the family get to enjoy. However, they can only visit a place or time they have already lived.  He is discouraged from using the ability to seek fame or fortune, and decides instead to use it to find love.

The trips back in time are often funny, some are bittersweet. There are always lessons to be learned.  In fact, the underlying message of the movie is to cherish the time you have with the people you love. We think the writing is remarkable, and each of the actors are believable, and lovable. It first came out in 2013, and we've watched it each Christmas since then. The season wouldn't be complete without it.

My favorite quote comes at the end of the movie. It shouldn't spoil it for you, and in fact, how the young man comes to this conclusion is the reason to watch. "The truth is I now don't travel back at all, not even for the day, I just try to live every day as if I've deliberately come back to this one day, to enjoy it, as if it was the full final day of my extraordinary, ordinary life."

Therefore when the family sat around the dinner table on Christmas day, and my philosophical daughter-in-law, who turns 40 next year, asked me if there is something I would tell myself at her current age of 39, I didn't hesitate. Live each day as if it's your last, and realize life is about appreciating all of the ordinary things we experience. Taking the children to school, drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, sitting in a quiet house at day's end. Savor each extraordinary moment.

Debb,  I do try to live in the present.  I don't see the point of nostalgia or living in sorrow over what's lost.  My problem is that I tend to go into the future too often, usually making plans or worrying about the future.  The present is really where life is taking place and it centers us if we can really and truly be in the moment.

Debb and Bernie, you two are such remarkable people and it is all of our IMMENSE pleasure to know you, do you know that? You really do "get" the life thing--the reasons why we are here, the purpose of those small moments, not to be missed.

Simply standing in a quiet spot of the world and taking in the silence--one of life's biggest and smallest moments, but priceless.

This title is going into my Amazon list to see if I can order it as a DVD, I think Larry and I would enjoy watching it--thank you! Love you!!

I'm putting in my vote for "drinking that first great cup of coffee in the morning," I embellished it a little but it truly represents one of life's great pleasures for me. It sounds like you have a wonderful relationship with your daughter-in-law. Happy New Year to you and yours.

One of my favorite movies of all time as well. Four years ago I was diagnosed with stage iv colon cancer, and it bought me up short. Had I really lived every day to it's fullest? Of course, the answer was no. But I had done a pretty good job of seeing my life with a clear eye. After I was given a cancer free status a couple of years later, I saw this movie on Netflix, and it spoke so many truths. As odd as it might sound, I would not go back in time and find a way to keep myself from that cancer dx, because it was one of the best things that ever happened to me in the end. I became more involved in my life, kinder, more awake, and more determined to positively effect the people I meet every day.

I guess that's almost a blog post in itself. Thanks for the post. Love it!

Oh my gosh, Bunny Terry. What an amazing attitude you have and I'm so grateful you are now cancer free. I imagine it would be life altering on many levels. I would love to read a blog about this event and how it affected your life to postively. Shine on...
