1. What is Leisure World of Maryland?

Leisure World of Maryland is a private, gated, active senior community for adults who are 55 years or older. It is regarded as a #1 active senior choice in the Washington, D.C. and Montgomery County area. Leisure World is not an assisted living facility and does not provide long-term care. The community’s mission is centered on promoting an active, independent, yet relaxed lifestyle.

2. Where is Leisure World located?

Leisure World is located in Silver Spring, Maryland 20906 in Montgomery County, near Olney and Rockville. Just minutes away from I-95, the Intercounty Connector, and the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metro Stations, Leisure World also offers convenient travel to Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

3. Who can live in Leisure World?

Adults who are 55+ years old may reside in Leisure World. Additional residents living with the primary owner must be 50+ years old.

4. How large is the Leisure World community?

Leisure World is built on a 610-acre parcel with over 55 miles of roadways. There are over 8,000 people currently residing in the community.

5. What housing is offered in the community, and how many housing types are there?

There are 29 housing associations, referred to as “Mutuals,” in Leisure World. The community offers a diverse array of housing styles and sizes. Most of the Mutuals are condo ownership, which include garden-style elevator buildings, hi-rise buildings, townhomes, and rambler-style patio homes. There are also coops in the Montgomery Mutual housing association; these include some of the garden-style homes, semi-detached homes, and townhomes.

6. What amenities are provided by the community?

Leisure World has numerous on-site amenities, including its 18-hole championship golf course, two clubhouses, a theater, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, tennis courts, two main restaurants, two worship centers, a post office, a maintenance (Physical Properties) department, and a medical center. In addition, Leisure World provides shuttle bus transportation, a cable TV package, trash and recycling service, snow removal service, and exterior maintenance of the home, yard, and common grounds.

7. Is there a medical facility, or easy access to medical care, in the community?

Conveniently, there is the MedStar Health Medical Center located right in Leisure World. The center has a diverse and skilled team of primary care physicians, medical specialists, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, dentists, social workers, and rehabilitation specialists.

8. Is there access to transportation within and to/from the community?

Leisure World has its own shuttle bus transportation with scheduled bus routes covering all Mutuals and main facilities/buildings within the community. It operates Monday through Saturday. In addition, there is an outside shuttle bus that takes residents to the Leisure World Plaza and the Olney and Aspen Hill shopping centers on Wednesday afternoons. Leisure World also provides a physically challenged van, available 7 days a week, for individuals who require physical accommodations.

9. What is the Leisure World Plaza?

The Leisure World Plaza is a retail shopping center located on Georgia Avenue, right outside of and adjacent to the Leisure World community. The center includes a grocery store, restaurants, medical centers, retail stores, hair and nail salons, banks, and a post office. Leisure World shuttle buses stop at the plaza Monday through Saturday.

10. What types of community activities can residents partake in?

With so many on-site facilities, residents at Leisure World can enjoy an active, social lifestyle by using the fitness centers, swimming pools, tennis courts, golf course, walking paths, and more. They can attend performances and hosted events at the clubhouses and theater. Additionally, there are over 100 clubs, organizations, and classes/seminars in which residents can become involved.

11. How do residents stay informed of news and important updates about events or emergencies?

Leisure World has a Daily Events Line (301-598-1313), as well as a Leisure World Channel (972). In addition, the Leisure World News is published twice a month, and there is always helpful information on the Leisure World website. For other needs and for emergency assistance, residents may call the Main Gate number (301-598-1044) and MedStar Medical Center emergency number (301-598-1055).

12. Is there a policy for visitors/guests who wish to enter the property?

Residents must notify the Main Gate (301-598-1044) in advance about any visitors. For frequent guests, residents can obtain up to 8 guest passes per calendar year from the Administration Building.

13. Leisure World is prided for its safety among its many other accommodations. How is safety enforced in the community?

Leisure World has Special Police who patrol the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, both on foot and in vehicle. The community is completely fenced and has three secured and monitored gates. With the MedStar Medical Center on-site as well, there is always easy access to medical care, assistance, and emergency services.
