2017 - It's Clean Slate Time - There Might Be An App for That!

What a year 2016 has been!  With all of the chaos that goes on in our lives, it’s a wonder we have time just to keep our homes clean, much less maintained!  Well, it’s now ‘hibernation’ time in our area so, now is the perfect time to wipe that slate clean…and your house!

Get organized!

Let’s start your New Year with a clean slate by clearing out those unwanted items and organizing your home for the year ahead. Go the traditional route or go the technology route with an app!

Room-by-Room Annual Schedule

This traditional system calls for you to follow a schedule to remove clutter over the course of the year with monthly organization that's broken down, room-by-room. If your most cluttered room is your kitchen, then tackle it in January.  Move on to the master bedroom closet in February and so on. Formulate a schedule that works for YOU or it won't get done!

Single Purge

block your calendarSo, are you thinking, “Forget the annual schedule, I want the whole HOUSE de-cluttered in one-fell-swoop?”  I’m a big calendar gal so, everything I do is blocked time; it works for me and I have far more time for me than I ever thought I would (that's a whole other blog post!).  Why not schedule a few days or a weekend or two to devote to the purging process?  My clients love my de-cluttering secret (if they stick to it!) - ONE ROOM AT A TIME!  The real secret is to simply stay focused on one single task at a time and avoid distractions.  One by one, work your way through each room until you’re finished with THAT one room…then move on to the next one…until you’ve purged everything that needs to be purged!

Decluttering Apps

Yep, you got it - there’s an APP for that too!  You’ll find plenty of de-cluttering apps that provide an effective way for you to complete the purging process. Here are a few examples:

Sortly

Shelf Scouter

Snupps

Home Contents - easy home inventory

My Stuff 2

There are many others available also but, these apps allow you to digitize your personal belongings, organizing them into categories. You can then decide what you want to keep, sell or donate.  Some allow you to partner with other users for organizational inspiration or even ‘trading!’

De-clutter your garageBONUS TIP

The garage is the first thing you see when you arrive home. When your garage is a cluttered mess, you step into your home feeling a bit like your life is that way too!  Don't forget to add the garage to your list of rooms - you'll love the way you feel when you pull into a neat, clean garage!

The end of the week marks the end of 2016 so, wipe your home slate clean by eliminating your clutter. There is no better time than the present to get organized in 2017.

Endre Barath, Jr. I'm much better at keeping resolutions when it comes to business than personal!  But, that garage has my name all over it for 2017!!

Good morning Debe.  We can't park one vehicle in our garage much less two. That would be first on my list.

Kat DeLong - I agree - especially if you're not going to be selling during the upcoming year!  The one-fell-swoop method works very well if you are!

Thank you, Brian England - And, same here - when I'm slammed at work, I admit to shoving things in drawers just to get them off of my countertops!  Now to go back and reorganize those drawers!

I so have to get this done this year, actually in the next couple weeks. My foster son's brother is moving in with us next week and we have to make room for him. A lot of clutter to be rid of.

Now, that would be awesome, Joanna Cohlan - I'm sure that the price would be a bit higher than normal apps but, hey, I would be willing to pay!  ;-)

People have no idea just how much doing this can change the quality of their life. I'm not one to use an app or a schedule to declutter and/or organize my home....I jump from one room to another until it's done....no rhyme or reason for me. That's just how I work. It's not the best way for most other people and not what I woud recommend. Everyone is different and it's best to get the job done with whatever system works best for YOU.

Thankfully I do not have a clutter problem and frequently address cleaning out closets and drawers. Everything needs to have a place in my house to keep me sane.

Sharon Tara - I have read that so many times lately too - it impacts our psyche and we don't even realize it!  It's so refreshing when it's all done - no matter how we accomplish it!  LOL

I was looking for some other app the other day and discovered them!  Then, I had a seller that I met with that wanted de-clutter advice to be prepared for their home sale in May and I thought I would share this and thought to investigate some more apps.  I mean, who knew?!

It's been an absolutely insane week and I haven't had time to fully check them out but, plan to put one of them to use in the New Year!

Happy New Year, Patricia Kennedy!

Debe,

I suspect it is time for me to address the basement.  I have boxes from 2000  that are still unopened :)  It is so easy to close the door and not see that space.
