Lost Your iPod? This Software Can Help You Find It

I have not personally lost an iPod, but I know several people who have -- whether they leave it somewhere or it gets stolen.

iPodSo wouldn't it be really nice if there were some sort of program to help you recoup your lost music?

There's been pressure on Apple to create some sort of missing iPod database.  After all, it can associate each iPod with a person through the iTunes service, but so far the company has resisted.

So Dave Schuman of iHound software decided to create his own.

By using iPods ability to identify itself to computers as a hard drive, he created a small, and free program that flashes up a message on the thief's computer when they first hooks it up to his computer and also secretly messages you.

Schuman said, "At that point, they've fallen into the trap.  We're going to transmit a signal back to our server, the name of the computer, the name of the person logged in, and the IP address and you can geo-locate it on a map."

The company has only been around for a couple months and has already helped 10 people find their iPods.

The software isn't solely for iPods, either.  It actually works on anything that has memory, from camera memory cards to flash drives.

How cool is that. That would have helped my boyfriend a few months after he bought his iphone and left it at the airport in Georgia. Would be nice if we could track it down and disarm it.

How would it know the difference between me using a different computer or the thief?

05/14/2008 10:53 AM by Schrader Inc. - Mobile Home Financing Specialists

Rebecca: I have no idea.  My guess is that it would think you were a thief, and then send the secret message to the owner, which is you.  And when you get that message, you can be assured that the software is doing it's job.
