The issue goes back a long time ago. The earliest time was during the Reign of Augustus. The reasons re varied just as the bled of grass or snowflakes. Some for infidelity, abandonment, financial, children or the lack of them, physical or emotional abuse, personal indifference and the list continues.
Divorce has been going on a long time. Just like each couple are different so are issues that arise. What I want to tell you is about the first recorded divorce in American history. It happened on January 5th, 1643 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony between Denis Clarke and his wife Anne. For you see Denis admitted to abandoning Anne and having children by another woman. He refused to return to Anne thus the courts granted her divorce. I don’t know who wrote the recordings but they needed some help. Quoting from the register the Court’s decision read: “Anne Clarke, being deserted by Denis Clarke hir husband and hee refusing to accompany with hir, she is graunted to bee divorced.”
No, the spelling is just what is written in the history books. I tried to do more research on what happened to Denis or Anne but I could not find anything else written about their lives. Thus, ends the history lesson for today
