Even Steven is a Nearsighted Man with a Selfish Plan

Thinking out loud; I propose this thought

that came to mind as I read

The Go-Giver by Burg & Mann this weekend:

Even Steven is a Nearsighted Man with an Selfish Plan...

Have you ever said any of these phrases or thought this way towards a spouse, friend or client?

"Now, We're Even Steven"

"You Scratch My Back, I'll Scratch Yours"

"Win / Win"

"50 / 50"

"Fair's Fair"

Amateurs act this way.         Scarcity thinks this way.

Instead of living the score keepers way, which is the subtle trap of win-win mentality, just give 100% to someone today! Truly put their needs ahead of your own and just give of yourself with the faith that when you do, you'll get what you need with interest! This is known as enlightened self-interest.

From The Go-Giver: Win-Win is just disguised score keeping.

Forget win-win and just focus on their needs. Keeping track of who owes you what is not being friend, it’s being a creditor. 50/50 is a losing proposition; 100% is the only way to truly give.

Zig Ziglar said: "Help enough people get what they want, you'll have everything you want."

I've heard this said:

"Give it out in slices, it comes back in loaves"

Proverbs 23:7-

As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is.

Which if I may be so bold to interpret, means what we focus on is what we bring into our lives

Why Not Focus on Giving from an Abundant Heart?

Here's a great call to make to your clients for 2017:

"What can I be doing for you this year, that would bring more value to our relationship?"

"Don't expect to collect the interest until you first, make the deposit"

Hi Thomas, it's actually a lot easier not to keep score, when things happen at ease, that's a healthy balance, I would say. Great post, I bookmarked it.

Agreed, score keeping certainly doesn't work with spouses or children, so why would we expect it elsewhere? Thank you for GIVING your comment to my post!

Gotta love those quotes, and Zig Ziglar gave some of the best!  When I was first licensed in 1981, my broker sent me off to one of his seminars.

Thomas, love this post!  I think that no matter what type of relationship you're talking about, you have to be willing to take 100% of the responsibility for it. And I love the ways all of these wise people have put it.

I was taught years ago to take 100% responsibility for my marriage and have faith that my bride will do the same. I think if you choose a great partner, it works that way. And with my son, the thought of keeping score never was; I just do for him no matter what.

I have never thought a lot about this but you are right on target.  Most of us are taught to keep score from early childhood!

Yep, it's a hard habit to break, but I did it for my second marriage and it works! It's not easy, but it's worth it. I've since expanded that to my best friends and VIP clients, and eventually it will spread to all...I'm still a work in progress on it.

Thomas love this post!  I find that those who keep score are so busy keeping score that they tend to loose sight of the bigger picture - being of service first.

Good afternoon Thomas,

These were drilled into me a long time ago in the grocery business.

Take care of the customer and everything else will fall into place.

Make yourself an astonishing day.
