Gazing At The Future In A Crystal Ball, Or Thinking Like A Futurist?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants

We have little faith in crystal balls when it come to predicting the future. We prefer thinking like a futurist even though the intent is not to predict the future. It is about observing the clues under your nose, and conjuring conditions and events as possible outcomes. The old adage, “when you want to hide something, the best place to hide it is in plain view”, is applicable.

What is in plain sight is often ignored such as gut feelings, anecdotal evidence, and trends. To be a futurist you have to develop the skill of observing the obvious, and let your imagination soar.  You also have to be willing to destroy your construct, let go of it, and begin again.  And, it helps to have a mastermind of similar minded individuals to explore with. So here are our thoughts on 2017.

Based on our observations and experiences, we think that psychographic branding and marketing is finally making sense to more marketing professionals. Some of the top Madison Avenue agencies are realizing that one size does not fit all and are opening satellite offices in smaller markets.

Print marketing is alive and well in the right marketplaces. Net-A-Porter, one of the most successful online luxury retailers, now publishes a glossy magazine. Even though this seemed like a “backward” move to some, the magazine premiered in 2014. It includes relevant articles on travel, fashion, and advice of what to buy. They understood that “women prefer to read about fashion on glossy pages as they shop online” according WSJ. The magazine sells on newsstands for $9.99 per issue or $48 annually for 6 issues.

Social media will continue to wane as a primary marketing influence in some areas of the country. People have pitch fatigue from online ads, and are tired of leading their lives in a virtual world. The majority of people we talk to do not spend significant time or energy on social media. At most, they may have a business page that one of their assistants monitors. Instead, they are re-discovering the joy of being present with others and the business benefits of meeting someone for coffee or lunch.

For some it is definitely easier to gaze at a crystal ball when it comes to predicting the future.  However, the rewards of futurist thinking are much greater!

Wishing you all a great 2017!

Very positive spin on futuristic thinking! People always need to ask, "What sets me apart?"

When I hear the word crystal ball, I think of fantasy, spooks, and fear or so much anxiety it could kill you!

We are with you on the importance of face-to-face and developing relationships. It's hard to believe social media is waning, but I sure hope so...I'm personally getting so tired of seeing people with their heads down looking at devices.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD my social media sampling would be considered anecdotal.  It consists of people we know in Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara.  Here, several women who were on a trip with their adult daughters exclaimed that their daughters were bored with FB and are so happy that they no longer were involved, and their benefit is that they had more time to spend together...Lots of those comments around here, and among the younger set also.  Also FB , Linked IN, and others are making a push with emails to engage their people.  A

Hi Ron & Alexandra - Making predictions is a passive endeavor - being a futurist gets you involved in making it happen. I'll still throw out the predictions - can't fight that economist training - but I much prefer being a part of what's going to happen.

Well how about that, I love the term Futurist and it reminded me of an old TV show where the Time machine could either send you back or forward in Time... that day is coming too but not in my life time:) in the mean time we will have to rely on my predictions:)) Endre

Ron and Alexandra- I'd rather follow your futurist observations than look into a crystal ball. Interesting about social media but if you think about it, many of the young people have a short attention span when it comes to anything new these days.  Well done!!

Your observations are very interesting. I am seeing more and more being consumed by Facebook and Instagram and spending less and less quality time one on one. Maybe that is because we are usually 5 years behind CA. I hope that we will see a falling away too.

Very interesting. I liked your though on social media. Probably, all attepts to become completely virtual would be fading out. They extend our world, our ability,, but they do not change us as social creatures, for whom to touch and to look in the eyes is important

Alexandra, I like very much what you see in the future in your version of the proverbial crystal ball. I personally would rather have a nice picture to see be it from a newspaper, magazine or whatever than just something shown on the Internet. My example is buying Under Armor work out clothes. I will check the Internet and then go to a retailer to see and touch the item in person before I buy. If I can at a better deal online perfect if not I buy at the store..

Hi Ron and Alexandra, thanks for your predictions, and dissing the crystal ball.  I (John) am allocating more time this year to SEO and website pages than I am to Social Media, and appreciate observations and opinion on the value of SM going forward.  I'm working on our 2017 Prediction and hope to have it out in a few days!  John and Kat

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - it's surprising to learn that there are more magazines in print now than they were a decade ago! Print media is going great - one needs to do it right!

I hope your prediction is right for Social Media - though marketing on Social Media is still going strong as one can target a specific segment of the market.

Hi Alexandra and Ron... great perspective. With almost five decades of work experienc behind me, I am always reminded  that "everything old becomes new again." In marketing, in fashion, etc. It's just figuring out how to make the old work for you again in a new way in a new era.
