The biggest private house in the world?? Under construction and definitely unique.

Forbes magazine had this photo and short write up about this private home being built in Mumbai, India by Mukesh Ambani who is ranked as the 5th richest man in the world.  He needs more room because his 22 story building residence is getting crowded.  It includes the following.

  • Separate gym for each family member
  • Six stories of parking
  • Four stories of open-air-gardens
  • A ballroom covered with crystal chandeliers
  • 65 seat theater
  • A spa
  • Swimming pool
  • Ice room, where you sit as snow drifts onto your head.
  • 27 stories high
  • Over 400,000 sq. ft.
  • Over two billion cost
  • Rooftop helipad

Inneresting...  I know he can, but why?

05/08/2008 08:00 AM by Tiffany Wilson (Shorewood Realtors)

That's crazy looking.  It looks like they just kept adding to that building as they needed more room but surely it was just planned that way...and people talk about WESTERN INDULGENCE?  Does Bill Gates or Warren Buffet have a 400,000 square foot house?

05/08/2008 08:03 AM by Ron Tarvin's Katy Agent Team-- Katy Texas Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty Katy@Cinco Ranch)

Wow! I think that it is a waste of money! I wonder if he could ever sell it for what he paid for it.

05/08/2008 08:25 AM by Julie Rodriguez (Home-Flip.com)

Oh... Is that true? Is this the only biggest private house?.. Thats crazy.

Best

Is there a scripture about building bigger buildings.......?????  I think this person is looking for notoriety not for more space.  It would be lonely living there.

05/08/2008 08:47 AM by Maria Holland (American Heritage, ABR,GRI)

Barbara, that's ridiculous. no one works out by themselves:-)

05/08/2008 09:20 AM by Peter Z. Nikic

Barabara, it makes you wonder what he will "down-size" to, and how much the listing agent will make:)  I will be able to retire after I inspect it!

05/08/2008 09:55 AM by Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com)

Ron Tarvin's Katy Team, you probably agree with me that when there are starving people in the world, and India for sure, it is absolutely insensitive to build a house like this for one family.

Julie, with that much money, he'd probably just do a tear down and build over it.

Sasha, click on the more info tab and read about it.  I believe it says they have 3 children.

Maria, wonder how many servants they'll have?

Peter, with this family they can even have a yard each.

Charles, apply for the home inspection job and get yourself a longer ladder!  They'll probably have a dryer vent on the roof.  If you get hot just ask to sit in the ice room for awhile.  Do be sure to click on the other information about this house.

And people are going hungry - huh, go figure!  Each family member having their own gym is obviously very important, I'm sure it keeps those arguments of "he's looking at me!" at bay; and the ice room - well he can come visit the northeast between December and March and get the same thing for free!

Wow, talk about using space efficiently. Amazing. Thanks for sharing it.

05/08/2008 12:11 PM by Lisa Lambert, Esq. (1031 Exchange Expert) (1031 Exchanges - Asset Preservation, Inc.)

Kathy, I'm with you.  Think how many hungry mouths just one story of that house would feed.  I  read the book called City of Joy where Mother Teresa was in Calcutta and seeing a house like this just makes me sad.

05/08/2008 12:14 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

Huh??  It takes all kinds of people in this world!  lol

Diane, some house, huh?

Lisa, each person has plenty of space, anyhow.

Must be all of the wife's that he has or at least thinks he has.

05/08/2008 08:58 PM by Don Eichler (Eichler Properties)

Barbara,

And you think my house is big!  Wow!  That was a big home, and very different.  It would look funny in Searcy!

05/09/2008 03:47 PM by Mary Paul, ABR,CRS,GRI, SEARCY, AR RE/MAX (RE/MAX Advantage Realtors)

Don, I think the only one who'd need a house this big would be someone with many wives and kids but the "rest of the info" made it sound as if there was one and three kids.

Mary, not only would it look funny.  It would cover up Searcy!

05/09/2008 04:25 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

I guess with unlimited funds, you can do what you want

05/11/2008 06:25 PM by Nashville Real Estate - Larry Brewer (Keller Williams)

With unlimited funds I still wouldn't build this house, would you?

05/11/2008 07:02 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

At first glance, I get it! Then I see who is building it and where. That is our money they are spending. Notice we are trying to feed the children in the whole world with what we have left after filling our gas tanks and this is what they are doing with it. Sign of the times. Sorry, didn't mean to go south but I couldn't erase my comment either. Anyone else feel this way?

05/11/2008 09:15 PM by Sheron Cardin - how2homestage.com RESA (California Moods Inc)

I understand your frustration.  What a waste of money.  And you do have to look hard at this photo to see the massive size of it.

Who the heck are the three anonymous people listed above and why are we allowed to be anonymous on A/R?

Thanks for the article. Whatever he does for a living he obviously does it well or inherited well and if that is how he chooses to spend his money so be it!

05/26/2008 11:33 AM by Kym Hough, Staging Consultant , Staged to Sell, SF Bay Area, CSP (Staged to Sell & StagersLIST.com)

Clint, thanks for viewing and commenting on my blog.

Kym, good question about anonymous.  But I wish they guy had done more for the poor in India rather than spend so much on a house.  Thanks for comments.

05/26/2008 12:03 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

Yes Barbara there are many poor there, but I have to assume if he is that wealthy he probably has produced many jobs for his country - I don't know anything about him of course and should read about him before I comment, but that is an assumption. Also, he might be one of the biggest contributors to the poor...we never know Look at Brad Pitt and his wife. They live large, fly large and are very wealthy yet give millions to the poor. Just wish I were in the position to do the same! Kym

PS I found out from MAureen Bray that you can set your settings to not have annoymous comments on your blog

05/26/2008 01:07 PM by Kym Hough, Staging Consultant , Staged to Sell, SF Bay Area, CSP (Staged to Sell & StagersLIST.com)

Kym, thanks again for commenting.  I don't really worry about anonymous comments and don't get too many.  It is nice to see who has written though.

05/26/2008 01:28 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

Hi Barbara,
Well that is just crazy. It will be impossible to ever find comps, so some day it will make a great condo conversion!

05/29/2008 04:19 PM by Richard Schardt - Triad NC Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty)

Wow, that is madness.  I guess that what George Carlin says is true: when you have too much "stuff" you have to get a bigger house to put all the "stuff" in!

05/29/2008 10:30 PM by Lesley Lambert Real Estate, Realtor, Westfield, MA (Park Square Realty)

Richard, it is crazy!

Lesley, they can put in a lot of stuff!

05/30/2008 11:36 AM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

I was expecting a photo of a huge mansion and I see a customized skyscraper.  It is unique for sure.

05/31/2008 02:57 PM by Sam Miller (RE/MAX Stars Realty)

Sam, it is, however, a private home so the article says.  Thanks for reading and commenting.

05/31/2008 03:32 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

That's ridiculous!  Think of how many countrys he could help with that money (notice I typed "countrys" not just "people"?).  Yikes!

06/01/2008 01:08 AM by Tori Lynn Ross - Omaha's Premier Home Stager (Ross Designs, LLC)

Tori Lynn, I feel the very same way that you do.  So many starving people....even in his country....

06/01/2008 01:10 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

God really bless  him and good luck

07/24/2008 09:31 PM by Joseph Chakumkuzhiyil

Things have really changed.  I grew up in a home with six people and one bathroom.  It's interesting to see what different ideas we all have about how much square footage we need to live.  I didn't see how many people are in his family though.  He probably quarters for staff too.

07/24/2008 10:06 PM by Mary Richards (Reece & Nichols Realtors)

I think I would spend my money on a better designed house.  That is just ugly.

07/24/2008 11:29 PM by Cindy Bryant~Houston's Home Staging & Home Stagers By Redesign Etc.~RESA~ASHSR (Redesign Etc., Inc.-Texas)

Mary, the people have more money than they know what to do with, I guess.

Cindy, it looks like a sky scraper, which it is.  And you know how we are about flat roofs.  It must not rain much where it is being built.
