Tips To Getting And Being More Organized In 2017

By

How do you feel when your home and life seem cluttered? I've always found that too much clutter around me seems to clutter my brain. And I've always found that when I clean out my closets, pantry, office, storage room, etc. I end up feeling much lighter mentally and my energy level soars. But I also know that for many the process of decluttering and throwing things out can be challenging, both in terms of making the time to do so and often just in terms of throwing something out. (I have a brother who is congenitally incapable of throwing anything out.) Decluttering and organizing isn't only for when you are getting ready to sell your home.

We are into the second week of 2017 and the first flurry of New Year's resolution-making is over. But that being said, many of us still want to resolve to be more organized in 2017 and here are some great "cheat sheets:"

  • 2017 Plan For 52 Weeks To An Organized Home
  • 60 Things To Toss Out In The Next 60 Days
  • 101 Items To Declutter Without Any Regret

Use one or use all... but if you follow at least some of these suggestions faithfully, by the time 2018 rolls around, you'll be well on your way to starting next year much more organized organized and decluttered!

Michael Jacobs ~ hi Michael... I've been cleaning up those photos on my computer and file and emails like a mad woman since mid-December. Got rid of quite a bit, including 1,100+ emails in my Outlook inbox alone. More to do...

Nina, there are so many that will benefit from your post. I love being organized and if it's clutter it won't last long in my house. For some reason it makes me feel stressed to have clutter everywhere. Can't stand it!

Nina- last week I went through my plastic containers and matched lids and bottoms.  Anything that didn't have a partner got tossed in the recycle bin.  Small move but one thing at a time.

Kathy Streib ~ hi Kathy... I do the same a couple of times a year. The "good" news is that I don't often have missing lids. And when I do, I'm often wondering where they disappeared to as they never leave my house and go from pantry to fridge to dishwasher. I guess it's a mystery like missing socks coming out of the wash!

Lots of good suggestions of things to get rid of.  I'd probably prefer to donate whatever anyone else could reasonably use.  A friend recently told me that animal shelters are happy to receive old towels and sheets for their cages.  I would not have thought of that.  We have a landfill that started 5 years ago relatively near our house and it's getting really big, so I am very cognizant of the need to keep as much out of landfills as possible.

Beth Bromund ~ hi Beth... shelters also like to have newsprint to line cages with. I bring bags of them monthly to my local shelter.
