As I prepared to write this post about the Community Guidelines I looked them over again to get a fresh feeling for what is said. As I read them the one thing that jumped out to me was RESPECT.
Respect of others can only come from Respect for oneself.
If you look at yourself in the mirror and can only see dis-respect, anger and feelings of loathing you will bring that with you into any community. I have been part of many different communities in my life and I have to say that the Active Rain Community is one that feels safe, it is encouraging to its members, educating them on how to improve their posts and their business. It's members willingly share their best practices with no thought of what they are going to get out of it. That is not so elsewhere, there are many groups I have joined that I have left due to the disrespect shown to people in the group for their opinions or for who they are.
Here in the Rain when members are sick, or going through a difficult time the burden is shared. We had a son on deployment in Iraq and we shared his emails as blog posts. We had members who we have never met from different parts of the country sending boxes of food, toiletries etc to his unit. We can never say Thank You enough for that.
As you hang out in the Rain you realize a tremendous respect for the other members, many of these people behind the posts have had incredibly interesting lives which just occasionally we get a peek of in a post. It does not mean they have had easy lives necessarily but each one has arrived here in the Rain and has something to share.
As we RESPECT ourselves, we RESPECT what everyone else brings with them as well. We pick up ideas to use in our businesses, we learn about the market in other parts of the country finding people to refer customers to who may be relocating, home inspections, flooring options, marketing, SEO and so much more. We get to smile at the jokes posted, and we get to enjoy some fabulous photos from around the country and around the world.
There is so much to RESPECT, not just ourselves, but each other, and those who created Active Rain and put those Guidelines in place from the very beginning and attracted people who carried RESPECT for themselves and others into the Rain.
