Old Farts Health challenge-First update

By
Real Estate Agent with The Virtual Real Estate Team 104556

So for those of you who didn't catch my personal challenge, it is for everyone who needs to go beyond a resolution on health, the number one resolution every year, and staying committed for all of 2017. We need a buddy system here that encourages everyone as well as some accountability. Although this is not a points paying challenge the results of all of us feeling better and being better at our job and life is the benefit.

For me this started off with my wife and I doing a meal plan that stays organic but a bit more creative with planning. No for the last three evenings we had no chicken orzo soup with a tofu substitute, a Miso Tumeric rice bowl with sweet potatoes, baby broccoli, edamame, and shiitake mushrooms, and a tempeh ceasar salad. All with spices instead of salt. Also I lot of fresh herbs. We are not against steak, we just like veggies more.

Exercise is one of the primary parts of the challenge and burning calories gets harder as you get older, especially at 69. The last two spin classes I did I burned 466 and 491 calories in 45 minutes. It's fun when you see women half my age trying to keep up with me. Friday I will do a one hour class and try to hit 600 calories burned. I add this to daily walks with our poodle that is usually about 125 calories, and then exercises at home with free weights, and stomach and back core strengthening exercises, and yoga thrown in on the days I don't spin. The key for me is minimum of 600 calories burned per day from exercise.

Last but not least is mental health. I use my apps on the iWatch for meditation breathing at least 4 times a day to get my heart rate down in the 70s bpm, and also reminders to get up and walk around so i don't work at the computer all day. Our brokerage is in our house and most of my clients are out of state or country so the reminder help. As I said I love the Apple watch. I thought I would get it just because of all the gift cards I have, but it has become an integral part of my accountability to myself not to slack off. So that is my first update and I hope this can give you an idea about how to challenge yourself. My business is flying and it is more successful and profitable than at anytime in my 26 years. Being of sound mind and body plays an important part. I hope you will join me at the Old Farts Group where my motto is youth is wasted on the young.

Good morning Joe.  My daily routine is just walking.  I'm increasing my distance monthly as my strength gets better.

Joe, I found some new research concerning increasing one's life span and the impact of exercise and social activies on someone's life expansion. The stats back up both. Exercise is so important. I worked out again this morning.. Keep up the good work. A Healthy diet is also an item which will help you to live longer.

Joe, Burning calories as you said is very difficult the older you get. I do lots of ab exercises but I still have too much in the middle. My abs are much stronger now but..

You provide inspiration and great suggestions for getting healthier, Joe Pryor ... something I know I need to focus more intently upon during this new year.  A life behind a LO desk does not equate with being fit ...

The most important home I sell is YOURS!

Today is day 15 with no beer.  I know that probably doesn't sound impressive, but this German girl loves beer.  But some acid reflux issues (me) and some liver enzyme issues (my husband) made us stop the alcohol.  I sleep a lot better.  In addition, I got an Apple Watch for Christmas and it's kind of like a nag.  Averaged 10,000 steps each day this week.  AND made it to a yoga class.

WOW, Joe! How exciting! You and your wife are aiming for a healthy 80+ at least! That many calories lost in spinning in 45 minutes? Yikes.

Good for you, and you are right, youth IS wasted on the young!

I've been adding more veggie related meals to our diet plan and have cut out most desserts. We do need to be a little more vigilant as we get older.

Hi Joe

This was a fun read and I will be checking out your follow-up posts, too. Eating well, getting plenty of rest, and exercising are all important, even more so as we get older. Sounds like you are on a roll...and a good one!

It is very important what we feed our bodies. Think about it: poor diet is the biggest contributor to early death, more than physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol combined.
