Goodbye California Drought - Hello Flooding!

By

It’s no secret that Californians have been anxious to see the ending of drought we have endured for 5 years.  But, I’d venture to guess most hoped we would more gracefully exit our elongated dry spell.  Alas, it wasn’t to be!

In the Greater Sacramento area, we have spent several days in continuing rain storms.  We are well above any average or normal ranges for rainfall.  And, after lackluster early winter snowfall in the Sierra Nevadas, we are currently receiving hefty amounts of the white stuff in the mountains.  Highway 50 and Highway 80 which transport traffic between California and Nevada, are currently shut down, due to mudslides and heavy snows.   If I wished to visit my daughter and grandkids in Reno, I’d need to kiss the thought goodbye!

We were at high water marks back on December 17th when I posted the picture below of the Sunrise Bike Bridge near my home.  However, the bridge still remained visible!  Currently, the bridge is completely submerged and cannot be seen from the surface. The Yolo Bi-pass weir downstream, which has not opened its gates since 2005 opened several gates today.

While I’m feeling a little house bound, I am safe, dry, and counting my blessings.  I don’t exist in a flood prone area.

All in all, life is VERY good!

Myrl, I hope you stay safe. We had a terrible flood here in June, 23 deaths and 1200 homes destroyed.

Myrl Jeffcoat - I haven't heard anything on my local news channels about your weather conditions. I am relying on people like yourself and Lottie Kendall

I'm glad to hear you're safe inside but I know how important it is to get outside and enjoy the sunshine too. The fact that the bridge is covered is very frightening. I would be careful to cross it even afterward. I hope the bridge holds out without structural issues.

I know you'll use your time wisely and I hope you get to see your family soon.

Hi Myrl -- your area has been hit hard, and some of the road washouts will take a long, long time to rebuild. Other than downed trees that caused a bit of damage, San Francisco has gotten off lightly.  The roughly 5.5 inches of rain SF has received in the last 12 days is more than the entire rain year of 2013!

The main problem we're having in Sacramento is much of the water is going out to the sea, so our drought remains. Sadly. The rain is melting the snow; it's causing the flood gates to open to release precious water, and it's not a good thing.

It's some crazy weather in the past year.  Hopefully you'll get a clear sunny stretch coming your way on the Pineapple Express, as we've finally had over a week of sunshine here.

Hi Myrl-glad you are high and dry. I friend in San Fran called me the other day to talk about the flooding. He said it was sad to see all that precious water raging into the Pacific.

There's another storm coming through today, I hear from my California office. Yes, it's been a wet winter. Wish we could store more of the rain coming through. It doesn't do us any good if it just flows out into the ocean.
