About Us

The Dallas Zoo, founded in 1888, began with just two deer and two mountain lions in City Park.  It later moved to Fair Park in 1909 and quickly outgrew its second home, moving to Marsalis Park in 1912 where it stands today.  Throughout the past 100 years, numerous upgrades have been made and collections expanded.  In 1955, the Dallas Zoological Society was established as a non-profit to support the Zoo.  In 2009 a public-private partnership was formed to transition to private management of the Zoo.  In addition, the Dallas Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals, and today, the Zoo is thriving with new exhibits such as the Koala Walkabout presented by Kimberly-Clark Corporation, SOAR, A Festival of Flight, and the Giants of the Savanna to name a few.  In 2017, the Simmons Hippo Outpost will open, returning these remarkable “river horses” to the Zoo for the first time in 15 years.

Lisa I got to see a large penguin exhibit in Gatlinburg last year.  I always thought penquins were bigger than they are, but they are not much bigger than a seagull.

OK now I wonder why is it called Penguin Days? Growing up I always liked going to Zoos as I got older less because of the inhumane conditions the animals were held... my favorite one is in San Diego, where they are almost in their natural habitats...Endre

Good morning Lisa.Dallas is about a 6 hour drive for me.  I lived in Dallas a long time ago on Haun Freeway off Buckner. We visited the zoo, it was a wonderful place then, I'm sure a lot of improvements have been made
