ActiveRain Newsletter coming soon

ActiveRain NewsletterRarely a day goes by that I don't find myself roaming the (cyber)halls of ActiveRain. It's my job. I have never confirmed this with Matt (I don't know if he can confirm it) but you would be hard pressed to find someone that views as many pages or spends as much time on this site as I do. Rich, Brad or Nicole would certainly give me a run for my money but they wouldn't beat me by much. Every now and then I take a break. It usually coincides with a weekend and the chance to spend some time with my family. Sometimes all it takes is two days out of the 'Rain' to make me feel like I have completely missed out on what is going on (My editor said this makes me sound conceited and really doesn't add to the purpose of this post.......so to show him who's boss, I have chosen to leave the content and force you to try to read through the line...hahaha)

For you, our great members, there are probably stretches of time when you don't get the chance to engage here as much as you may like. Some commercial ringing in my head said......"Life Happens" and it couldn't be truer. Business also happens and you have no doubt found yourself with so much on your plate that stopping by and checking on ActiveRain didn't fit into your schedule. However, Once you catch the bug, many members fit ActiveRain into their daily schedule no matter what. Until you figure out the real benefits to you, some members may struggle to fit it into their daily schedule because they can't quantify the benefits.

So we are going to bring ActiveRain to your inbox. We just put the finishing touches on our ActiveRain newsletter (thanks in large part to Glin, our new designer). We plan on doing something daily (five days a week) and I wonder if that would put any undue burden on your inbox? As long as we make the opt-out painless, I would think the burden would be minimal. Since you had no opt-in decision when you first signed up, I'm looking for feedback on how you feel about it.

Here's what the newsletter will look like (image on the left........as if you, my perceptive reader needed to be pointed to only image on the post :-) )

The newsletter will contain a collection of featured posts, tutorials, messages from ActiveRain, featured video content, a featured member of the day/week (someone whose contributions to the network are above and beyond what you would expect of someone.....and there are many of you), a featured group of the week, a few advertisements, and some other goodies stashed in there every so often.

Our goal is to keep our members up to speed when they aren't able to actually visit the site as often as they might like. We also stand to make a few dollars on advertising, but it will be unobtrusive much like the current advertising we run on the site. It will be very easy for you to opt out as well (although we hope the prospect of some great content will keep you involved)

I feel like the benefits to our newer member, and those that have stopped by but never really took the time to get engaged will be immense. We are so excited about the growth and evolution of ActiveRain and we want to share that excitement with all 86,000+ members. So.........let me have it! Where do you stand?

118 Comments on ActiveRain Newsletter coming soon

I am the editor and that little message after the lined out paragraph makes you look even more conceited than the first paragraph did.  But I guess blogging is all about transparency, so it is a good thing to show your true personality to the ActiveRain members.

05/07/2008 07:29 PM by Jonathan Washburn (ActiveRain Corp)

Haha!!! Since I only have about 80 subscribers and it's their feedback that I'm really interested in...........they already know my personality (for the most part)

05/07/2008 07:32 PM by Bob Stewart - ActiveRain (ActiveRain)

GREAT IDEA!

What about three subscription options: ActiveRain Daily, A Weekly Newsletter, or Opt-Out

I'd start at the Daily, but would love the option to scale back if necessary, without opting out completely. You're busier at different times of the year too. Great job, and the newsletter is looking sweet!

05/07/2008 07:37 PM by Jason Todd, Real Agent Blogs ( ~ Marketing, Branding & Blogging ~)

Bob, I love the idea, like right now I am traveling and have little time to read and comment. So a newsletter will be fantastic. Do you spend as much time here as me ?  LOL

05/07/2008 07:37 PM by Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams Ann Arbor, Michigan)

LOL...  I am laughing at Jon's comment.... LOL

Bob,.... I got your back....    seriously, this is a great idea. Especially since I am struggling of lately in finding the time like I use to, in visiting the 'Rain'......   but a news letter 5 days a week?  That sounds like a lot of work....  maybe Monday, Wed., and Friday?  or Monday, Thursday, and Saturday?  In any case, again, this is an awesome idea and I am looking forward to this....

Will this be a daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly newsletter.  Will it have an opt in or opt out feature?

05/07/2008 07:40 PM by Pam Winterbauer ~ 2006 REALTOR® of the Year (Windermere Welcome Home)

I think a newsletter is an excellent idea.  I assume it will be through email?

05/07/2008 07:53 PM by Barbara S. Duncan ABR, CRS, GRI, e-PRO Searcy AR (RE/MAX Advantage)

Hmmmm... does this mean I should start writing feature-worthy posts? i just hate that!

05/07/2008 07:58 PM by Portland Oregon Real Estate Broker * Jennifer Bukaty * (Bridgetown Realty, Inc.)

Bob,

I had 6 hours of CE courses that took up all my time today and I know what you mean..."Sometimes all it takes is two days out of the 'Rain' to make me feel like I have completely missed out on what is going on" ...Gotcha!!! Thanks,   Fran

05/07/2008 08:05 PM by Fran 'The Title Man' Gaspari Title Insurance-PA & NJ (Patriot Land Transfer, Inc.)

Bob, love the idea and look forward to seeing the newsletters!  Do you only accept cash or will credit cards or paypal be accepted for bribes to be the featured member?

05/07/2008 08:10 PM by Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate (RE/MAX Allegiance)

Nice idea!  Will it have a forwarding Feature to share with others?

05/07/2008 08:14 PM by Audu Real Estate~Grand Rapids, MI Real Estate Broker

Bob- I know we talked about this before and I still feel this is a great way to connect with members who are not active at all to those who are semi active. I do not have a problem being on Active Rain, no matter how busy I am I have not missed a day yet in my entire time here. And most of the time I check here before I even check my email. It would be a great newsletter to forward to other agents but then if you do forward it, make sure you send your invite link with it so you get the credit if they do join.

05/07/2008 08:30 PM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

I love the idea. However, It would be so kewl to really have lots of links and show more in the newsletter than the actual post. I volunteer to help where I can!! Count me in to not opt out!

05/07/2008 08:33 PM by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart )

Good idea!  Interesting to note how many people (myself included) wish they could spend more time in the Rain.  The market is slow all over, yet we all have so much on our platters that we're busier than .... (fill in your favorite metaphor)...

05/07/2008 08:35 PM by Cheryl Johnson, Bob Taylor Properties, Inc., Los Angeles, CA

How about 'TGIF' (weekly cap newsletter), 'Hump-Day' (Wednesday's newsletter) and 'Make it a Great Week' (Monday newsletter recapping the weekend happenings)??  Five days is much and I would hate to be the person that would have to put that together everyday!  Hey up the anty on Mr. Block there, I will take the member feature, thank you very much!

05/07/2008 08:39 PM by Gilbert Arizona Real Estate - Candace Robinson (HomeSmart )

I think it's a great idea Bob. BTW I love editing job you and did at Jon's suggestion :)

Are you guys coming to DC?

05/07/2008 08:42 PM by Monika McGillicuddy~ N.H. Real Estate Broker & Trainer (Prudential Verani Realty/Hampstead)

Cool idea! Maybe it will spur those inactive members! I don't think 5 days a week is too much. If a person can't read then they can just save or delete - simple simple! Can't wait!

05/07/2008 08:47 PM by Jo Soss | Bremerton WA Real Estate (Skyline Properties, Inc.)

Will it have Localism features, so we can forward to clients, or is that a newsletter yet to come?

05/07/2008 09:03 PM by Mike Jaquish Keller Williams Realty, Cary, NC (Keller Williams Realty)

Hourly would be much better.  24 of them a day.  Every day.   You aren't thinking big enough.  This could be huge.  HUGE! You've got to think BIG!

05/07/2008 09:09 PM by Jessica Horton (Brio Realty)

SGSG, Jessica!  What an awesome idea.  Many of us members try to reach out to newbies and engage them, but this could be the ultimate tool in getting them to return to the site regularly and see the benefit.  You guys just keep getting smarter and smarter, except Bob who knows everything already, I just wish he would share it with us - his adoring public, more often!  <SVW>

05/07/2008 09:13 PM by Michelle DeRepentigny, *Real Estate Broker * Athens, GA (Success Realty)

Bob, I love it and I am one of your 80 subscribers. I had to read through the text with the line through it because it was there but I thought it sounded fine.

I have all my Active Rain post go in to an outlook group so they don't clog my inbox and I'm sure I would do the same with this.  I am then very good at reading what has come through.

05/07/2008 09:24 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

I kinda like the idea...not sure if I want it daily...or just weekly....I mean, I am already addicted to this place...you give me something like that in my mail box daily and I will not be able to get anything done!

05/07/2008 09:25 PM by Jeremy Blanton- Myrtle Beach Real Estate ,Coldwell Banker Chicora (Coldwell Banker Chicora Real Estate)

Ok, here is the deal... I am here every day... seven days a week.  And I miss a LOT.  There is NO way that anyone can catch the best stuff each day, so a newsletter is a great idea.

05/07/2008 09:41 PM by Lane Bailey - The REALTOR for Car People (Century 21 Network Realty)

Bob - Good idea however once per week would probably be a better idea.  If the newsletter arrive everyday people might stop reading them and just hit the delete button.

05/07/2008 09:43 PM by Jennifer Fivelsdal,ABR,GRI,SRES (Keller Williams Realty)

As much as I love AR and as much time as I seem to spend on here some days I think a daily newsletter might be overload... for me at least. I would subscribe to the weekly newsletter if such an animal existed, but I don't need another email coming in daily.   My .02 worth.

05/07/2008 10:01 PM by Fairbanks Real Estate Broker Jesse Clifton (Jesse & Kathy Clifton, REALTORS - 907.699.6024 - )

Bob I seen ActiveRain add on a lot of features since I joined back in 2006, and this one has to be one of the best ones yet.

05/07/2008 10:01 PM by George Souto (McCue Mortgage Co.)

I think this is a fabulous idea to keep the interest of new members and maybe pull some of those that are MIA back into the fold.  I wouldn't want to be the person putting it together 5 days a week, but I sure won't opt out.

With all of these upcoming changes, can we expect to see the new Localism soon?

05/07/2008 10:21 PM by Lisa Heindel, New Orleans West Bank Real Estate (Latter & Blum Inc. Realtors)

Bob,

I LOVE it... this is a great addition.  I think it's fine for you to fill up everyone's inboxes... I'm sure we all know where the "archive" and "delete" buttons are located if it gets to be too much!  J K :)  I like the idea of featuring groups, too.  It takes a while to learn about all the groups and what they represent.  You might get Brad to show you where the "backspace" key is located... In our training class in Dyersburg, TN, he mentioned that he uses that a lot when he writes posts!  BTW, I didn't know you guys (gods) have editors!  Lots of perks when you're a Rain god! Wow!

05/07/2008 10:36 PM by Jan Evett Panama City Beach, FL (Century 21 Ryan Realty, Inc. )

Bob, Interesting.  I am on AR 7 days a week.... maybe only 5 days if I am on Vac.  I love searching thru the mess of posts.  About the NL, It will be hard not to focus on the few great bloggers.  And then the problem will  also be that those who barely touch AR will rely on the newsletter and get the editor's bias view. But it probably is a good Idea. AJ

05/07/2008 11:29 PM by Alan 'AJ' Nisen California Contra Costa Mortgage Officer (A Large Bank in America)

many members fit ActiveRain into their daily schedule no matter what. Until you figure out the real benefits to you, some members may struggle to fit it into their daily schedule because they can't quantify the benefits.

I for one am all for it :)  (just don't continuously spam me with how good looking and cool you are :)

I'd like that better than searching around for tidbits of info here and there from you guys. Sometimes you get lost in my subscribed list....until like...now. :)

05/07/2008 11:42 PM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), Hawaii Real Estate & Hawaii Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Bob:  Your comment about filling up email inboxes is well taken.  Perhaps rather than daily, maybe Mon-Wed-Fri would be a workable compromise.  Great idea... thanks for sharing...

05/08/2008 12:59 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Sometimes when you're gone for a few days, you come back to find a post got bounced.

05/08/2008 01:06 AM by Paul Slaybaugh, Scottsdale AZ Real Estate (Realty Executives)

Paul:  I have never had a post get bounced.  What would make that happen ?  Do you mean it just did't go through when you hit submit, or someone on Active Rain rejected it ?  Just curious.

05/08/2008 01:12 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Hahaha........you are cracking me up Slaybaugh!!

Karen,

Paul is in a group where he is the moderator and he has decided that any posts I put in the group will be thrown out. I believe he is trying to  infringe on my first amendment rights........Is there someone here on AR I can contact regarding this?  :-P

05/08/2008 01:23 AM by Bob Stewart - ActiveRain (ActiveRain)

I visit fairly often, and yet I feel I miss so much, with all that is going on.  The newsletter feature sounds great.  I get hundreds of emails every day...1 more isn't going to overload me :)

05/08/2008 01:34 AM by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty)

I'm on here daily, at least once, but I still miss good stuff!  I'd love another opportunity to find juicy tidbits, and another opportunity to gear up and go for the 'featured' post.

Whatever you do, could you please make sure it hits my Twitbin?

05/08/2008 02:14 AM by Susie Blackmon NC Realtor, Maggie Valley, Waynesville (COLDWELL BANKER)

Yes, it's a good idea.... and what Jason and Amanda said.  and Lola... and then I cut to the chase.

05/08/2008 04:27 AM by Georgina Hunter Maui Realtor (Jim Sanders Realty Inc. - Maui)

Bob looks like a great idea. I am sure it would be well received by the majority of the members.

05/08/2008 08:09 AM by Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty)

I like the idea.  You guys continue make AR better and better.  Thanks.

05/08/2008 09:27 AM by Michael Shankman, Selling Las Vegas real estate (Liberty Realty)

I think the idea is great and agree with the options for daily, weekly or opt out.  I would like to be able to send some of these to clients as well.  Will that be possible?  Could I use selected posts on my websites?

05/08/2008 09:31 AM by Joyce Bradley (Century21 Select Group)

Guys what an awesome idea for the newsletter. I cant wait til the first one comes out. IT's a great centralized location for what I have missed.

05/08/2008 09:32 AM by Orlando & Lake Mary Real Estate Expert, Heather Joubran (RE/MAX Central Realty)

This sounds like a great idea with some additional great ideas in the posts above. Thanks!

sounds good, I am on a yahoo stashbusting thing that sends a DIGEST, I like it b/c I can scan to see what I am interested in or if too busy just delete and miss what ever it was that was earthbreaking.

really I just like it for the pictures!  cheryl  www.ozarkcastle.com

05/08/2008 09:47 AM by

sounds like a great idea!  There are so many good blogs out there I barely have time to read them all and this will help us stay current on the really good ones that might be helpful to us!  But I agree that everyday might be a bit too much!

05/08/2008 09:51 AM by Naoma Doriguzzi -Wachovia Mortgage (Wachovia Mortgage, FSB)

maybe...AR Newsletter ...and newsletter links from the GROUPS, too...??

05/08/2008 10:06 AM by Asheville's GREEN Land & Homes ECO-Steward Realty

I'm liking this idea, Bob - a newsletter will help me to see what else is going on in AR besides my usual "haunts" and introduce groups and topics I haven't thought of seeking yet - Kudos (editor, I hope this doesn't make the office have to buy larger hats) lol

05/08/2008 10:09 AM by Kent Simpson REALTOR®, e-Certified®, AHS® (with The Pepper Group™ Diversified Real Estate)

This is great news. Looking forward to reading the newsletter.

05/08/2008 10:12 AM by Michael Setunsky (Michael's Commercial LLC)

This sounds like a great idea.  I rely on my Inman post twice daily for industry news.  This should help focus on important matters also.

Have a go at it.  Hopefully, it won't be too tech oriented.

05/08/2008 10:22 AM by Lenn Harley, Homefinders.com, MD & VA Real Estate

The idea is a good one, although another email a day is going to be a bit much. Will there be a place to go and review past issues of the newsletter? I may opt out and just review the newsletters as I have time.

05/08/2008 10:32 AM by Greg Knowles Santa Barbara Ca. (Lawyers Title Co.)

Thank you very much for adding this feature. It has sometimes been challenging to keep up in such a diverse community.

05/08/2008 10:33 AM by Vickie Nagy San Ramon California Real Estate ABR CRS (Empire Realty Associates)

Hi Bob, what an awesome idea on many levels...visibility, convenience and revenue. very, very cool. If I can help in any way just let me know.

05/08/2008 10:39 AM by The Blog Artist - marti garaughty (The Art Of Marketing You)

Sounds like a winner! Thanks for another great tool - when should we expect our first issue?

05/08/2008 10:46 AM by Debbie DiFonzo, Broker, United Country VIP Realty

We all like the sound of this newsletter. I think it should be daily and if we cant review it that day than we just delete it.  Does seem like a bit of work s a big THANK YOU for doing some of the tough stuff for us!

05/08/2008 11:04 AM by Kristina Yorke (Trinity Home Solutions (mortgage consultant))

I like the idea, however, I'm not so sure about 5 times a week for me and my overburdened inbox personally.  I think it would be great to have a daily for those that want one and a weekly recap.  You might also have a series of initial newsletters that could go out to new subscribers to help them get up to speed in less time because it can be time consuming sifting through all the information available in the rain. (I'd probably subscribe to that series even though I'm not "new")

05/08/2008 11:23 AM by Matt Moxhay Moorestown Real Estate (Prudential Fox & Roach)

Newletters are an terrific but time consuming for you! A benefit to us.........and I for one appreciate a synopsis - and it certainly with be an add-on rather then take away from my daily participation in A/R.  Thank you for continuously trying to improve and add to the community!

05/08/2008 11:24 AM by Liz Moras, Re/Max Associate Broker Chilliwack (Vancouver), B.C. (Remax Nyda Realty Chilliwack B.C.)

This is such a fantastic idea. Why Can't non-members subscribe to this newsletter?

05/08/2008 11:36 AM by Camarillo CA Real Estate Agent/ Mana Tulberg (Beach View Real Estate)

Nice duo at the beginning Jon & Bob :)

The format of the newsletter looks choice! Nice, clean, smooth and very easy on the eye balls!

05/08/2008 12:05 PM by Barnett Associates Real Estate, LLC

Father of Kelan...

For me it's like I need it at least once a day :)

If I don't have it once a day I get bitchy testy :)

But then again...I've been told that I am full of crap :)

What was this post about? I forgot :)

TLW...ROAR!

Bob, this is a great idea. Most of my reasoning has already been mention.

05/08/2008 01:20 PM by Frank Rubi Louisiana Real Estate-Homes for Sale (Specialized Real Estate Services, Inc.)

Bob- fill my box to overflowing...its all gravy with me...I am already like a alchoholic in a bar, diabetic in a candy shop with AR....whats a lil more?  Just remember, if you are doing that....you need to put at the top the warning label I suggested before!  addiction

05/08/2008 01:22 PM by Jeremy Blanton- Myrtle Beach Real Estate ,Coldwell Banker Chicora (Coldwell Banker Chicora Real Estate)

Bob -  I think this is an AWESOME idea ! As for me, I have been so busy this week that I am sure I have missed some really great post's ! I love the idea of the newsletter because I can flag it ( as to not forget about it ) and go back at my leisure without missing a day of AR ! You guys are BRILLIANT !! Now, would you "techy" guys like to design my newsletter....well, well, that's a thought....how about each member being able to design a newsletter through AR to send to our clients !!!!!!!!!

05/08/2008 01:57 PM by Crossville TN Real Estate Melissa Grant Cumberland County and Surrounding area's (Third Tennessee Realty and Associates)

I LOVE THE IDEA!  I say go for it!  Will there be an option to view it in HTML or WYSIWYG?  I think it would be a great way to stay in touch with AR on my crackberry when I am out of town!  I am already getting 300-500 new emails a day so what is another one?  If I have time I will read, if I don't have time I will delete it.  Ain't no big thang!

05/08/2008 01:58 PM by Renee Burrows - Las Vegas NV Real Estate (Nevada Realty Solutions)

It sounds AWESOME, Bob!! I look forward to reading the first edition and I'm certain it will become favourite reading for all in no time....

So this newsletter will be sort of summary of the best of the day? As a new user I would like to hear more about how other members are using Active Rain.

05/08/2008 02:33 PM by

I think it a great idea just don't fill our mail boxes tooooo much. Please

05/08/2008 02:39 PM by Richard Lecinski (Long Realty Company)

Bob, I like the idea and I think that it would be awesome to run. With that said, I am kinda wondering why leaving it off on the weekends is an option instead of running it 7 days a week, I think that it would be better each and everyday.

05/08/2008 03:12 PM by Danny Thornton (Home America Mortgage, INC.)

sounds like a terrific idea. Can't wait to see it. AR has helped my business so much

05/08/2008 03:13 PM by Team Carroll, Cranford,Westfield NJ Area Real Estate Professionals (Team Carroll - RE/MAX Classic Group)

Yes, yes yes....great idea, I miss so much here with the working with the clients and all.....  :)

05/08/2008 03:19 PM by Ida McCarthy

Bob This is such a great idea, I am here everyday but sometimes don't get to read everyone. This would be great to catch up!!

05/08/2008 03:20 PM by Jeannette Neerpat, e-Pro Coral Springs/Parkland Real Estate (London Realty Corp)

Bob, that would be a great idea.  I think Melissa Grant's idea  above is reallly something for you to think about!!

05/08/2008 03:41 PM by Owensboro,Kentucky- Real Estate-Vickie McCartney,Broker,ASP,ABR,E-Pro (Home Realty GMAC RealEstate,Owensboro,KY)

Bob-  Playing devil's advocate - will readers be able to comment from the newsletter?  If they can, will that cut the number of members visiting the AR site, which in turn will lower readership of the majority of blogs (those not featured)?  Will new members take the time to find the wealth of information on AR or will you be raising a generation of "rainers", who just depend on the "Cliff Notes" version?

Just some rendom thoughts.  I know receiving the newletter will not cure my addiction to AR.

05/08/2008 03:51 PM by Marilyn Katz - Westport, CT Real Estate (Prudential Connecticut Realty)

I'm guilty of being away more than I'd like lately. I think it's a great idea. I think the expert hi-jackers should definitly be featured at some point or another.....and they know who they are ;-)

05/08/2008 04:12 PM by Maple Valley WA Broker/Owner Colleen Fischesser 425-432-5400 (RE/MAX Select Real Estate)

The more I think about this the more I like it but I hope that it can be a newsletter for our client base ss well.  I do not think we need to sign them up pepr se but if there was a way to glean specific articles or posts from the summarized best blogs, I think it would be a great tool for AR members to use to create their own newsletter or in conjunction with their present newsletter.

05/08/2008 04:20 PM by Thomas Bradley

I like it!!! Of course it's not like I ever miss a day on here BUT it would be nice to get a newsletter just in case. My suggestion would be to add a "Broker Bryant's Corner" to it. After all we all know this place is all about me me me me me me me me me Bob.

05/08/2008 04:42 PM by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc

Sounds like a good idea. With the site growing so large, a daily newsletter might be a good way to spotlight some of the top content.

05/08/2008 05:26 PM by John Novak - REALTOR®, Las Vegas and Henderson, NV (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

Good idea, it would remind us of how important AR is to our business

05/08/2008 05:58 PM by

I was hoping the rain gods might take initiative and pull this off. Thanks a lot.

05/08/2008 06:24 PM by Alan Robinson (PTE REAL ESTATE GROUP)

I am definitely for it. I think this would be a great idea. This would help me recruit real estate professionals onto this site. Active Rain is always coming up with something new.

05/08/2008 07:20 PM by Lanre Folayan "Buy a home in Washington,DC" (EXIT PREMIER REALTY)

Yes, I'd love a newsletter.  But, even better, would be an online 'punch list' of stuff I want to do to my blog. Yeah, I know, I do use the bookmark button, but when I go back to read those posts, I get lost along the way, bumbling along the trail like the kids on Family Circus. Do they make Virtual Assistants for AR? LOL
