maui morning rainbow

Haiku Maui Hawaii - it's a great place to grow things.

We are blessed with an almost perfect climate here in Haiku - and this spring has been one of those years when we get early morning showers to keep everything green and fresh.  It was good timing for a veggie garden, so hubby got the tractor out and made me a nice spot right close to the house this time.

Let's see, what do I have growing now.... lettuce, mesclun, cilantro, basil, dill, Vietnamese coriander, lemongrass, marigolds, cosmos, pole beans, brocolli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, habanero peppers, more kinds of hot peppers, kawelo tomatoes, cucumbers, and sugar peas.  And a whole 'nother garden with just corn - which the birds are already enjoying (the sprouts)!

It's all organic, with complehumus fertilizer, bone meal, dolomite lime, chicken manure, composted wood chips with horse manure, and green sand.

The trick is to remember to plant successive crops, every month.  Once you start harvesting and eating, it's easy to forget starting some more rows.  It takes a lot of space to have multiple garden areas.  We are lucky to have lots of space, so no excuses anymore.

There are plenty of pepper and tomato starts that I need to get in the ground now... these will produce for months.  In fact some of the pepper plants will keep going for years.  The Hawaiian chili pepper is a small red pepper that grows prolifically, and it's fiery hot.  Good for making chili-pepper water, a local seasoning.

Georgina,

What a beautiful garden you have and your selection of herbs, flowers and vegetables is wonderful....I miss gardening so much. Reading your post brought my gardening days all back to me. There's nothing like fresh herbs and vegees picked right from your own garden.  It sounds like you live in gardening paradise.

I'm jealous, my side yard that was supposed to be my garden has now been devoted to my 100lb German Sheppard...

But I DO have a huge lemon tree which is loaded right now, and a small orange tree.  The orange tree hasn't grown in the 6 years we've been in our home, but it puts out about a dozen oranges very year that are the size of grapefruit. =)

Connie - I find that wherever the dogs poop makes for some good fertilizer .... put the shepard under the orange tree!  How's that for organic fertilizer!

BJ - I just love being able to step out my door and grab some herbs when I need them... otherwise it's a 15 minute drive to town, and that's not happening.

Hi Georgina,

Wow, I love this post and I love your garden. It's something I love to do myself. BTW, I've never heard of "mesclun"???

Lynda - Mesclun is like a spring mix... assorted lettuce, some mizuna, mustard, beet greens, arugula, like that.  Just a nice variety of flavors and colors, and easy to harvest with the scissors.

Nice gardens.  I can't begin to list everything in our gardens.  With over an acre of intensely gardened land the plant list is in the thousands.  Keep doin what you're doin.

David - Wow!  That's a lot of work... and a lot of food too.  We're getting ready to put in another big garden this weekend.  I just love having all those fresh veggies and herbs.

I had to read Mesclun twice. I thought you typed something else. :)

Very nice Georgie. I have garden envy. You know if you ever have too many veggies you can always bring some into the office.

OK - you got it.  And if you ever have too much time on your hands, come on out and pick some stuff.  We're planting more today.  I opened my big mouth about needing more room to plant stuff and Murray made another huge garden ... aaacckk!
