I have received several emails today asking about the Week In Review. Alas, the ball was dropped again and we will not have one. Does anybody even want one?

Dueling MiceThe ActiveRain Week in Review was originally started by Matt Heaton as a way to recap the best of the week's articles and to summarize the important happenings on the network. Matt published the Week in Review the first time on November 6th of 2006. It was immediately popular.

It is impossible for any of us to continually keep up with all the good articles that are published on the network. We have jobs and families and outside interests that keep us from being on ActiveRain full-time. So, in December, Matt requested volunteers to host the Week In Review. A number of 'Rainers volunteered and the Review has been maintained by the members of ActiveRain ever since.

The current list is down to one name. Jeff Turner will be the Week In Review editor for this week and his Review will be published next Monday, March 5th. After that, the list is empty.

I like the Week in Review and I look forward to reading it with my coffee on Monday morning. I always find articles that I missed during the week. They have always been worth reading. The Week in Review is not just a list of featured articles, there are many examples of great articles that were not featured at the time. And, each Week in Review has been individualized by that week's editor. I get a glimpse of how the editor writes and how they view what is important.

Does Anybody But Me Want To Keep The Week in Review?

If you want to keep it, leave a comment. If you don't want to keep it, leave a comment. If you don't care one way or the other, leave a comment. We need some member feedback about this. ActiveRain is a member driven community and you are a member! Your opinion counts!

I suspect that most people will want to keep the Review. We need volunteers to host the Week in Review beginning March 4th, 2007. The week runs from Sunday to Saturday and is published Monday morning. Before you volunteer, consider the following:

  • The review takes alot of time and effort. You must be willing to commit to the effort necessary. The editors of the Week in Review spend all week reading and making notes and then several hours writing and formating their Review. It is not a small task.
  • Hosting the Review gains you some community recognition. Each review is individual.
  • The editor of the Week in Review receives 600 additional points for hosting.
  • The Week in Review always gets alot of comments!

Two out of the last three Reviews were never completed. Billie (aka TLW) hosted the last one and tried to cover the week before because it was MIA.

If you are interested in hosting the Review, leave a comment. Please read Matt's original post beforehand. There are some minimum requirements to being an Editor. There is also a Week in Review Editor Tool available. It makes the job of organizing and publishing the Review much easier and is available to any Editor.

Mark -- I enjoy reading what different people think was important from the week and would be sad to see it gone....   Since I have already hosted it, I will pass going forward on hosting it again...  I hope others step up.

Mark Flanders:  Do we really want it? Hmmm, I am sure some want it and some don't and some don't even know what the week in review is since we have 50 new members a day on average.  I think it is a great way to read a good blog that was missed if you have time to go read a blog that you missed.  With the number of blogs increasing on a daily basis then we might as well have THE DAY IN REVIEW SOON.

If I had to vote on keeping it or getting rid of it, then I would vote to get rid of it but then it wouldn't be fair to the people who like reading it and constructing the week in review.  Does that make sense?

Mark, I've enjoyed reading it since I joined AR.  I think it should stay if we can get folks to volunteer.  I'm willing to do a week if they'll have me, but it would have to be after 3/12.  I'm taking my broker's exam that day and am cramming until then.

Okay Maggie, if we keep it, I'll be voting for you. I know you will do a good job of it.

Thank you kind sir!  I appreciate the vote of confidence.  Would it be deemed unoriginal to use that template of yours?  It would cut an hour or two off the commitment.

I was just wondering when the winner of the 10,000 points will be announced...  I'm sure it says somewhere in that post, but I just couldn't seem to find it.

Maggie would do a fine job, in my opinion, by the way.

Mark - I LOVE the Week-in-Review, and really look forward to it each week.  I love being able to catch the posts that I might have missed, and it's a great way to highlight those posts that were the cream each week.

I've hosted it in the past, and would be happy to do so again.  It was ALOT of work - time, reading, commenting, and keeping track of those posts to include - but what a great way to meet new people and network with others that you might otherwise miss.

My vote - KEEP IT PLEASE!

Ann, I'm with you, I'd like to see it stay. I look forward to it.

Maggie, any of the editors is welcome to use it. It has 7 different color schemes and several have never been used. I have had good feedback on it.

Karen: The 3rd place winner will be announced tomorrow. 2nd place on Weds. And 1st Place on Thursday.

Mark..  I like it and haven't paid attention to it in the last 2 weeks, because I have been opening a new office. I vote to keep it, because I could have used it in the last week. In regards to volunteers, I could do it again, even if we don't have it after next week.

The Hurley's: I hadn't thought of that. It's always been weekly.

Jeff B: I appreciate the offer. You have done more of them than anyone else :) I hope the new office is going well, that is alot of work.

Mark - As much as I enjoy reading it - I believe I am one of the "ball droppers"!  I think it was up to me in the middle of the month while on my second of three trips to Las Vegas.  I enjoy it - but I don't think I can commit to doing it.  Apologies.  Tony

Mark....  my pleasure. Like I said, if it comes down to it last minute, I can do one. I prefer to have at 3 days in advance at least once. Way too many blogs to do it last minute.  thanks

Personally, I see great value in continuing the Week in Review. We need to provide opportunities for more voices to be heard. With 18,000 members and growing every day, we need to recognize new and ongoing blogging efforts. My vote is to keep it going.

Time for some of you new faces to step and host the review!!!

I vote to keep it. I find it very valuable, and there's always something I missed.  I don't think moving it to two weeks would help - it would double the time for someone to read and report on two weeks of posts, and there's much to be lost if blogs are read and chosen only every other week. Any many, many thanks to those who have volunteered and given their time!

I agree with Sharon about not stretching it to every 2 weeks.  That is TOO much to have to go through.  Having done it before, 1 week is ideal for the Weeks-in-Review.  I have missed them these past 2 weeks, and really hope we can get them back up and running.  And I'm happy to do my part in helping to keep them going.

Wow, I seen the week in review once and found it very informative. Too bad my life is extremely busy with my wife about to have a baby in about a week or I might want to give it a shot.

Bad Joke Time:

ring***ring***

me: Hello?

Overpriced seller: Yes?

me: I was looking at your house, I did a CMA and you're 75K overpriced. Are you going to drop the price?

Overpriced seller: Hell no! I need the moner for...

Me; Are you standing near a window?

Overpriced seller: Yes... Why?

Me: Hold for a second...

LOL Luke I think you need to add that joke and graphic to Tim M's post from today lol

I would love to see the week in review continue. I do understand people get busy, and I'm sure if someone is scheduled to do one, and they can't, and they LET SOMEONE KNOW ahead of time, someone else can step up to the plate.

I think two weeks worth of reading might make it even harder for some to keep up with their review 'job' - just MHO

I have not read a weekly review but think it would be a great tool to have. There are so many articles that I am sure I miss.

Luke: LOL

Do all New Yorkers have larger than life personalities? Or is it just you? You've been stealing my graphics so, I'm going to steal this one. :)

My worry is that this is too much for one person, and because of the time commitment most people can't fit it in with work and family.  I wonder if a larger group of volunteers would be available to do a "day in review" to be combined at the end of the week for publication?  This seems more manageable, and you get the view of 7 different people per week on what is "review-worthy."  Just a thought.

Another LOL @ Luke...This guy's giving me a run for my money. But that's a good thing.

Now I am not the only one going off topic in a comment :)

Mark...

1. My vote is to keep the review.

2. A review for 2 weeks? Whoa. That's a lot of work. I would know. I suspect the review itself would be too long to keep a readers attention if we did them every two weeks.

3. Do I get an extra 600 points for my attempt at putting two weeks together? Yah. I know. Probably not :)

4. It may not be a bad idea for the person who does the review to notify the next in line and let them know that's is their turn.

I feel that the review helps the people that do not have the time to check into (good way of putting that) Active Rain everyday. There will always be posts and featured posts that have been completely missed by some of the members. We need to keep it in tact and perhaps 'pitch' it more. Like others here I have always enjoyed the reviews.

I'll stay on the volunteer list, but please give me a month or so I still have RainBrain :)

Mark,

I realize that I am new and still learning the blogging thing.  However, I am addicted to Active Rain, and would be up for the challenge of putting together a week in review.  Just let me know when and consider it done.

If there are some special guidelines, let me know that as well. Thanks.

Mark,

Haven't been here a month yet but I am willing to host this important AR feature. Just don't put me in for the week of March 22nd as I will be hosting the Member Spotlight. Email me the guidelines when you can and we'll go from there. Thanks-
